For scenery around Vegas, Mount Charleston is about a 45 minute drive and you can drive up to the lodge at the top.

We went to California in 2013 with 3 teens, our nephew 15, our niece 18 and our daughter 17, their favourite things were
The Warner Bros Vip Tour - a must for any 'Friends' or 'Big Bang Theory' fans vipstudiotour.warnerbros/ Hiring roller blades at Venice Beach LA Lakers basketball match - this was booked for the benefit of my BIL and nephew who are big sports fans, the rest of us just went along to keep them happy but we all had the most FANTASTIC time!

I second the Warner Bro's VIP tour - If your kids love TV shows/films it is a great way of seeing a working studio and the tour guides are really knowledgable.
We visited the hollywood sign, griffith observatory, Malibu beach, Laguna Beach, beverly hills and the typical touristy things. We loved the zoo and could have spent a lot longer there!

Not sure about your route, but my 14 yr old son loved Palm Springs. You could stop off for a night on your way to Anaheim or San Diego. If just going for a day, I would do the Tramway (cable car). There are short (and long) hiking trails at the top - which have amazing views. If you don't like walking, there are viewing decks and a restaurant. If you stay for longer, then consider the Living Desert zoo (in nearby Palm Desert), the waterpark, the art museum, and the night market (which I think is on Thursdays).
You could drive through Joshua Tree National Park to get to Palm Springs. |
