We booked a multi centre trip last year LHR to LAX then 2 internal flights and flew home from Las Vegas. We did it through Expedia, but spoke to them on the phone. They were extremely helpful and came up with numerous ways of doing what we wanted.

Always get a guide of prices on expedia - Kayak etc and then to get the best price you need to go on the airlines website and choose the exact flights and times to narrow down the best deals.

Also, be flexible. It might be that you will get a super cheap price by stopping in Washington instead of NY say.

We normal do multi centre trips as it works out cheaper and you see lots more. Our trio to Florida last year stopped in NY on the way out and Washington on the way back...it was just cheaper that way and we had a longer holiday enjoying a stay in the North East.

This summer we are going to Hawaii but stop for 5 days in LA on the way out and then in the way back are staying in San Fran and Yosemite for a few days.
