I'd like to have an electric vehicle but we are a Victorian terrace and I think the car companies and government need to get the charging network/ battery tech sorted out to make it a possibility

Sounds like a great idea. But of course reality will hit home over the next few years and these type of soundbites tend to find their way into the political aspirations dustbin.
Mass unemployment equals less consumer spending Less spending equals less profit for suppliers Less profit for suppliers equals less investment in new products A perfect storm really. However my Son picks up his new Diesel SUV on Monday and I will be buying one after next August as the MOT is due in September and I haven't had one of those for the last 25+ years.

I was looking at an all electric car last year but couldn't be worrying about having range anxiety.
Purchased a new Toyota corolla hybrid so no need to charge it as it does it itself Went with Toyota as they are reliable and have over 20+ years experience with hybrid starting with the prius also the cost of charging the car away from home at the street charging points works out a lot more expensive if you cant charge the car from your house Edited at 09:44 AM. |

It is great to see the charging banks arriving around here - Clapham. Even the roads around Clapham Common West side (where I now live) of Edwardian terrace villas have banks of 10-20 bays and being used. It’s good for me as I am very pre environment friendly (I did nearly buy a bug gas guzzler earlier this year but gave myself a good talking too) and being an asthmatic the air is getting so much better and without doubt its a good thing to happen for all sorts of reasons. The manufacture need to make them more affordable tho and hopefully consumer will put pressure on them to do that

I would be quite happy to have one but at the moment I live in a flat. And I drive a lot for my job so not sure how it will all work but I’m sure in 9 years time there will be solution other than dropping the extension out the spare room window.

Having moved to electric I personally would not go back. I’ve a Tesla though and the charging network is much better than non Tesla and no hassle compared to the spotty non Tesla network. However that will quickly catch up.
I’ll be replacing my current Tesla with another, in about 2 years, maybe a Model Y. They are meant to be developing one costing about £20k. Large numbers of electric cars will come online over the next few years and prices will go down. Tesla now though are in such an advanced position on the tech and battery tech that others will struggle to match them- which is why Tesla is of this morning worth $418.5 bn, more than twice the next company Toyota. Running costs are next to zero. I’ve done 10,000 in mine over 19 months (lockdown) and I bet that has cost me a total of £350 or so- no tax, no service, no congestion charge, etc. Literally I’ll I’ve spent including electric is £350. Plus insurance of course.

Yes a relative of mine has one and we loved it! I think they're bringing out an suv version (maybe it's here already), that is slightly less expensive - although still a massive cost for many.
The tech needs to be there - and the govt decision will hopefully prompt the car companies to focus on that - and the prices need to be affordable. |

The Model x is the SUV which starts around £83000 (the one with the gull wing doors). The most striking thing about it though when you drive it is it is like being sat in a bubble as the windscreen curves right around the back of your head. Obviously not affordable for most.
You may be referring to Model Y which is in the US (Tim Tracker just got one) and they are coming here next year. Basic model is about £45k for one of those. They are like a shrunken Model X crossed with a Model 3. That’s what I fancy next (I have an S). Model 3 is currently the cheapest at 40k. So none are cheap but my pal just leased a 3 long range for under £1500 down, £470 a month which isn’t bad for 10k pa when you think if he was doing 10000 miles he would save probably £100 a month on petrol plus car tax (£30 a month for equivalent powered car). These are performance cars as well. They will do 0-60 in under 5 seconds and are amazing to drive with instant torque. I once had a MS P100 with ludicrous mode as a courtesy car. That was mental. You press a button on screen and it heats the battery up to make it go even faster. 0-60 in about 2 seconds, twice as fast as the Rita coaster at Alton Towers. I once had some guy at 5am as I was going into work try and cut me up in an S4 and he basically disappeared in the rear view mirror as I put my foot down. My S 75D is plenty fast enough to be honest (faster than my BMW 335). If you want a non Tesla option the Hyundai SUV I saw on a very good lease deal earlier this month (for some reason much cheaper than the almost identical Kia). It was about 375 a month 3 down, 10k pa. My dream car next year would be Model S Plaid. That will do 200mph, 0-60 in 1.8 second and 500 miles on a single charge. Problem is price at 130,000 which is too much for me to say the least, albeit if you compare it to the hyper cars it beats in performance it costs a lot less than them.
