Disappointing Avis experience at MCO

We arrived at MCO with BA on Tuesday, on a flight & car booking.≈ We were nearly an hour late getting off the plane due to an airbridge fault.≈ We have Avis preferred but for some reason when we booked it didn't link, think it was to do with an old credit card, but we thought, no problem it's just DH and I, we'll deal with it on the day!

We had booked a standard SUV.≈ Waited in a small queue at the desk and then called to a lovely, chatty young man (this was obviously a ruse!), explained about our avis preferred not registering so he happily added that on, then started umming and ahhing. He told us he could give us an upgrade for 90% off! Me: no thanks, just the two of us, we don't need it.≈ Him: but you don't know how much it will be! It's only $5 a day and if you take the upgrade you can go straight away, if not you'll have to wait 40 mins for a car to be ready! Me: no we don't want to upgrade!≈ He kept muttering about cars needing cleaning/refuelling.

He then spent the next 5/10 minutes promising us various other vehicles, then changing his mind, before printing off paperwork then going to talk to his supervisor.≈ Eventually returned to say we needed to come back in half an hr and see manager at the end of desk.≈

We went away annoyed, but we needed to pick up our visitor toll pass. Did this, then sat for 10 mins or so before DH went back to avis, car not ready, another 10 mins or so and our name was called and car was finally ready.

We ended up nearly 2hrs later than expected out of airport, so pretty exhausted.≈ We were not happy, never had this delay threat before! Felt it was really poor service!≈ I can imagine anyone arriving with young kids would feel pressured into the upgrade to avoid the wait.≈ Anyone else has this, all our car hire experiences over recent years have been hassle free as long as we have been firm about no upgrades.≈ Definitely feel like avoiding avis in future!

We use Avis a lot including at Mco yesterday and two weeks ago .
We are preferred and go straight to the garage there is also a desk there who deal with everything, yesterday our name wasn’t up on the screen and DH went to the desk ( over in the garage) and sorted it they never seem to do the hard sell over there.
He was just being rude and trying to take advantage of you .
There were dozens of cars there yesterday and plenty of flights in including BA and Virgin when we went ( we hadn’t come off a flight ours was changed due to the proposed BA strike)
Try going straight to the garage and it should be a better experience, we always do it that way with Avis and have used them in 6 US airports this year with no hard sell .

Not good at all that they made you wait. Always plenty of cars ready, just trying to take advantage.
Yes agreed as above, even without the booking not linked to your preferred account. Never go to the desk in the terminal. Always go to the garage.
We have used Avis quite a bit either as a fly drive or booked with booked. Never had a issue with the desk in the garage.

If he rental company does not have a car in your class available, they should give you the next class up at no charge. Ifyour flight arrives early, they may be able to have you wait but on time or late, they need to upgrade,

If it happens again, ask to see a manager right away.

Thanks all! If we do avis again I'll remember to go straight to garage.

The up selling is standard but as already mentioned if you are ever told your car grade is not available for any reason then they should give you next class up no charge, so if it happens again simply say I will take next car grade up as it states in your terms, if they say none available then you will take the next up again then.
Never walk away and call back to collect car later unless you want a certain model like a convertible.
Nothing worse than getting messed about on arrival.

On another note I have just had a good experience with Avis Miami, arrived car was waiting in my space and off I went, returned car receipt collected with $0.00 to pay just as it should do.

We are well used to dealing with the up selling but never had this insistence before that car wasn't ready. Probably not helped that DH is not particularly impressed with the Forerunner we've been given compared to others in the same group/class, so don't even feel it was worth the wait!
