2 Fatties in a Fiat 500 - North Coast 500 - Travel Day

We live around 30 minutes away from Luton airport, and our flight today is at half 10, so we stick to the 2 hours before rule and head to the airport around half 7. Drive is nice and easy to the airport and we park our car in the pre booked car park of choice, the multi story just by the Terminal. We find a spot fairly easily and unload the car with our cases and take the short walk to the terminal. Check in with Easyjet is fairly straight forward and we complete the self check in and wave goodbye to our bags.

This was our first trip since the start of the pandemic, so we didn’t really know what to expect but It was nice to see the airport quiet, and sail through security. Once through security we avoid the onslaught of perfumes and dutyfree, and head to Frankie and Benny’s, we demask and make use of this time to relax in a fairly safe environment. Breakfast is the usual airport quality, and we have one of their big breakfasts to keep us going.

Boarding is soon called and we head to the gates to board. I had booked us speedy boarding so didn’t scramble to the gate to get overhead bin space. I was quite shocked to see the amount of people boarding the flight, social distancing had gone out the window along with a lot of peoples masks. We were soon on the aircraft and in our designated seats, the plane was around 95% full with a handful of empty seats, luckily for us one of those seats was next to us. The crew were great at enforcing the mask policy and politely told a number of passengers to either fix their mask or to put one on. The flight to Inverness was short and sweet lasting just over an hour and the views out the window gave me my first glimpses of the scottish highlands. Upon landing we were told remain seated until the row in front had gathered their belongings and moved on, of course many ignored this and the crew told them that they wouldn’t open the doors until everyone was seated, told off they all followed the rules and took a seat.

We were soon off the plane and in baggage reclaim, it took a while for the bags to come out but were soon on our way. Next stop was the Avis desk for our car, and soon enough we had the keys to our ride for the next 8 days, a little Fiat 500 we nicknamed Nessy! If you can guess from the title of the trip report we are on the larger size so it was nice and snug in the small fiat with all our baggage.

Our starting mileage

First stop on our Scottish adventure was Tesco! We stocked up on snacks and food for the room for our first few nights in Inverness.

Our choice of stay in Inverness was the Mercure in the city centre, we parked up in the small hotel car park and checked in, we were a little early but there was not an issue getting us booked in. The room was a little disappointing, on the first floor we overlooked a staff area and the bins, and also there was a nice stain on one of the pillows. A quick trip back to reception saw us in another room, on the 4th floor overlooking the main street outside, much nicer modern room and clean bedding!

Once rested in the room for a while we headed out for some lunch, and chose a nice spot in M&S cafe. There is not a great deal going on in Inverness, and after a short walk round we had covered most spots. We soon headed back to the hotel, and just lounged around and watched rubbish on TV, our evening meal for the night was a take out from a local american dinner style restaurant, one burger for me and mac and cheese for my wife along with some brownie for dessert.
Inverness was really coming to life now and come kicking out time at the local establishments saw some of Invernesses finest filling the street. Cue lots of shouting, singing and police sirens, it was quite entertaining watching out the window and seeing what would come round the corner next. I was starting to think maybe the view of the bins may have been better! The street started to quieten down a bit so we headed to bed for the night ready for day 2 in inverness.

Day 2 Here
