That's fab! Where are you based? Do you think he might return home after graduating or will he stay in his placement area? If so, it might be worth looking at the cost of housing in each area for later on.

Have both universities got good employability? We supply students to West Midlands Ambulance Service and have 100% employability but not all universities do ...

You could also check the stats of the various student surveys, eg, National Student Survey (NSS) for student satisfaction at both universities

Thank you very much for those thoughts, he has lots to consider. Employability is high at both, Surrey just pips it I think. I dont think he has thought too much further with regards to where he would live after his course. But hes always been very much for being close to home but neither are too far from us in Essex.

I think on the whole Surrey is the slightly better University for facilities etc but the accommodation is a bit nicer at Herts. Cost wise Herts is a bit more pricey for an ensuite on campus.

Just wish he could visit them to get a feel for them. We are going to have a drive to both to check out the area and whats close to the Uni etc which will hopefully help him. But I think first and foremost needs to be the actual course itself and its structure. See what he prefers.

Thanks for your help. 👍 🙂

DD has accepted her firm choice and insurance choice and we have all done our finance forms. With regards to finance, what are peoples opinions/experience with regards to paying for accommodation and spending money? For example, dd qualifies for approx £4000 loan. Her preferred halls cost £8100 for the year. Do we pay for the rent and the loan becomes her spending money? or is that too much spending money? i literally have no idea what sort of budgets students have. I was a student 25 years ago and we went for a night out on £10 so i think it might be slightly different now lol

Any advice or experience welcomed x

Mine certainly won’t be getting £4000 for spends lol
We will make sure she has £40-£50 per week for food etc

I have supported 2 through Uni and DS is just coming to the end now. Rent is timed to be paid at the same time as the student loan comes in 3 times per year. The way it worked for us was:

Student Loan In
Rent Out
Rent shortfall paid by me (currently £900 per term)

Additionally, I transfer £50 into the kids account on a Monday (not a Friday as it might have got spent at the weekend!)

Both have been very grateful for how I have supported them ... but after 5 years (2 of them overlapping) I am looking forward to keeping my money to myself

That’s what my sister did for my niece in similar circumstances.

My eldest is currently at Uni and he gets £50 per week each Monday from me. He is very good at budgeting and thats more than plenty for him.
When Freddie starts in Sept I will give him the same and he will need to adjust to that as hes not so great with budgeting, he has expensive tastes 🤣
