Washington to Orlando Road Trip

Next year we are thinking of flying into Washington DC, spend a few days exploring the capital before driving to Orlando.

We don’t want the quickest or easiest route. We are looking to spend several days exploring, staying a night at one or two places of interest.

Has anyone done this before? I’m looking for suggested routes and places of interest.

We are a family of 5. The kids are 16, 13 & 6.

We did a trip from Washington to Orlando in 2015. It was fantastic. Only thing I would change is to add an extra day (or even 2) to Washington, lots to see there. Our trip was via theme parks and the Blue Ridge Mountains. I have a blog with a trip report *here*

Various routes.
I've stayed in blue ridge mountains myself, very rural a lot of it.
Rehobeth beach is great.
Carolinas are great, Hilton Head in particular.
Savannah and Charleston.
Georgia / Florida border- At Simons and Jekyll Islands.
I've been to all, but I would say if you are going to Washington (4 night trip) and spending at least a week in Florida, you'd need 4 weeks away otherwise you'd be sick to the back teeth of 1 night somewhere, not actually seeing much, then on the road again.

Eastern seaboard and across the Chesapeake bay bridge/tunnel to Williamsburg in Virginia for a couple of nights. A visit to Jamestown settlement is great for kids. Busch gardens and water country are fantastic - on a par with Orlando parks at a quarter of the price.
Charleston South Carolina and Savannah Georgia are both lovely.
Not a great fan of north Carolina but everywhere else on your trip I love.
Agree that the days travelling on that route can be long so try to have a day free for every day driving at least.

We did this the other way round in Sept/Oct 2016, we did NYC, Philadelphia, Washington DC, then we flew to Orlando for a week at the end of our holiday, we loved DC its an amazing city with all the major attractions free, our 3 nights there were not enough so we are going back again this year for 6 nights.
