Car hire Sicily

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong section, but any good deals or recommendations for European car hire companies, specifically in Sicily for this summer. I’ve signed up for Auto Europe, but not had any good deals yet. I’ve done a fair amount of research, but all seem to be quite expensive. There also seems to be a lot of information regarding the importance of taking out zero excess cover with the hire company or separately.

Many thanks.

I have no idea about any type of car hire outside of the USA as when I was working the organisation sorted out any hires I had.

I do know though that for any type of hire in Europe or here a zero excess policy is absolutely essential.
Loads of posts I read say to go DIY and not take the rental companies policy as it can be had for a lot less.

Money Maxim is a good starter for ten.

Best of luck in your hunting

I did a lot of research on this . We went with Enterprise/Alamo/loucauto in Palermo . Booked via holiday autos and took out the axa insurance . We looked at booking direct with the companies but it was dearer. We booked in March for our July trip And the prices are crazy high because of etna being active. €1200 euro hold in cc or we couldn’t collect and €2600 excess . They do drive like maniacs as well. Don’t choose a big car either or you won’t get round the towns . I’ll try and find the cost for a polo , think it was around £400 for the week.

Just had a look and the polo we had is £317 for the week with €800 euro hold on cc and €900 euro damage and €3000 theft excess. That’s a good deal with enterprise through holiday autos with the axa ins . There was also no upsell at the airport desk and the car guys were really good and it was a brand new car. We took the estate as there were 5 of us but you can see why we found it hard going , lucky dh drives for a living so not a scratch on the car but i
don’t know how !

Thanks Tom. Appreciate the advice.

Yes, independent zero excess sounds good, although apparently the car hire takes a large amount on credit card deposit.

Thanks

Thanks Mexy02. Great info.

Yes, I want to get the smallest I can given the narrow streets. There are 4 of us and only 3 cases, although 3 of us are tall. Some cars say 2 pieces of luggage so maybe that will do, e.g. 3rd piece on back seat of 5 person car. We'll only have cases for 30 minutes each way from/to airport.

Thanks.

I would def use holiday autos / Alamo again . I did take photos of everything on collection and return though.

Hi
If you don’t mind getting a shuttle I would seriously consider FireFly with AutoEurope. August 27th one week rental. Renault Captur, zero excess including tyres, glass undercarriage & roof. £277 1 additional driver included. Never rented in Sicily but use AE and FireFly from Milan couple of times a year and never had any problems. Vehicles can be well used so I always takes lots of photos and every time the car has been signed off with a quick check that the fuel gauge is reading full.

Thanks for this information.

Good to hear some positives re Firefly.

There's loads of negative information about them on Trip Advisor and other sources.

Thanks, again.
