I’m personally not at all fond of the crowds and chaos of Times Square and much prefer to stay within a close walk.

We loved the big suite (for NYC) and the views from the Doubletree Times Square but hated battling our way through crowds after a long day to get to our hotel. I thought in my last visit it has got much worse and apart from a quick photo stop - which everyone has to do right - would find no reason at all to revisit personally.

We like the Affinia hotels, mentioned above and last trip stayed at the Shelburne (also mentioned above). Took about ten minutes to get to Times Square, walking, and very close to Grand Central. It was blissfully quiet for sleeping and had some lovely neighbourhood restaurants on the door step.

We’ve also stayed near ESB few times and Lower East Side (a bit gritty for me TBH).

NYC is very walkable and public transport very good. Maybe work out what you want to do / visit and you may see an obvious location to stay?

This is our favourite too, stayed here twice and will get there again.

The Hilton Times Square has closed permanently due to the economic impact of Covid. Similarly the Roosevelt, Courtyard Marriott Herald Square, and Omni Berkshire Place have all announced permanent closure. They won't be the last.

"Permanent" in this context means that the current ownership/management have no intention to reopen as a hotel (Hilton TS owners handed the keys back to their lenders). Theoretically new ownership/management could reopen these properties as hotels, under the same or new names.

This is a really good point and means recommendations from previous stays should be treated with extreme caution!

Totally unaware of that and yes, this post makes perfect sense. We have to work out not who WAS best, but who IS still in the marketplace.

Rui plaza Times Square looks nice and it has breakfast included.

We were booked into hotel Beacon (upper west side) as they do suites. But had to cancel this years trips.

If we manage to get there next year I think I’d want to be more central to be able to walk more rather than using the subway.

Another vote for beacon, subway a short walk away.

Central park and museum a stroll away, supermarket over road. Big rooms with kitchenettes.

Edit. Subway does have a lift.

That's very sad.
