Kids and jet lag
Appreciate everyone is different, but what are peoples experiences when arriving home with a 5 year old.
If landing back in the morning the day before term starts, what are your / their experiences on the first few days after re jet lag? Any tips to reduce this or just to get a good sleep on the plane coming back.. Thanks in advance

I actually think something where you have no choice but to get up the following day is the best remedy. Stay up the day you return, something fun in the afternoon if the wee one starts to flag and then bed at the usual time. Works for all of mine.

Thank you... makes sense re the 'getting up and on with it'.
I expect it would help if they had a decent sleep on the flight home too!

My experience with our DD is that she is tired at bed time (post-WDW Fatigue) around 7pm, but then wakes again at about 11pm for about 2-3 hours every night for the first 4-5 days after we return from the USA. That would be consistent with the respective tired afternoon time and bedtime in the US and she gradually shifts back to normal by the end of the first week back.
It's pretty waring, and this has been the same since she was young - is now 8 and still does it. We try to keep her occupied and definitely get her up at usual time etc to help the return to GMT.

We always arrive back in the Uk the day before work and school if we can. We get the latest flight home from Florida, we like to spend our final day travelling down to Miami, going to Sawgrass Mills and having something to eat. We then get late flight home, around 11pm which arrives back in to the Uk mid to late morning, 10.30 ish. We find the later flight out of USA helps us get more sleep on the flight, as we are ready for bed at that time. Arriving late in the Uk, means it’s a shorter time till a normal bedtime. We don’t put our son to bed at all during that first day (he’s older now, but have always done this whatever time the flights were). We stay up til as near normal bedtime as possible and find we are tired enough to sleep. Always feel tired in the morning, but we never really get any jet lag. Our son has always just sailed through it and I’m sure it’s because we just go straight back to a normal routine. Kids are so resilient really.

We always arrived back with at least four/five days before our son had to go back to school. He used to have a sleep on return but then we all decided to stay up which was much better. Going to bed at his normal time and trying to get up at normal school time seemed to work really well.

There are a few flights from the US that leave early morning US time and arrive back into the UK in the early evening, home and into bed as normal.
We used to live in Boston and always took the 7.30am flight. Our home was close to the Boston T, blue line. So a quick underground line trip to the airport, a perfect journey. BA always had a Boston and a JFK early morning flight. Definitely the best for jet lag |

We always stay awake and keeping going until round 9pm on our 1st day back and haven't found Jet lag too bad. A few years ago we landed back in the UK at 11am on the Saturday and had to be up the next day for DS all day rugby tournament at 7.30am. Have to admit it was like raising the dead getting us all out of bed at that time but that year we experienced absolutely no jet lag at all.

Definitely stay up and get on with it.
We've been travelling long haul since our 15 year old was a baby. You just have to get back into your normal routine asap. We tend to get home and start unpacking and then go and do a food shop. Late afternoon trip to the park for a run around - possibly a takeaway for dinner and then showers and bed. |
