Another one for “His dark materials” the books are brilliant.
I read the “The Lord of the Rings” when I was 14 and I would say it was without doubt the greatest book I’ve ever read, which led on to a life long fascination of the author JRR Tolkien’s world “Middle Earth” Other rip roaring fantasy adventures could include the Shannara series of books starting with the Sword of Shannara. These are such brilliant books, so well written by Terry Brooks but be careful if he gets into them there are 23 related books.

As has has been already mentioned, my 14 year old has read most of these books already, and a few years ago too. It's so hard to buy books not knowing what they've already read, I would definitely err on the side of a voucher, or adult fiction. My son loved the Da Vinci Code and then read several other Dan Brown books. And has enjoyed some adult crime fiction too.

Beast Quest books, although think they are aimed at kids younger than your son. Might like them though? There’s loads of them too so will keep him busy!
