Car Hire - Avis v Alamo

Hello all,

Wondered if I could get your thoughts.

I have a 13 day booking for a standard SUV at £310 coming up soon with Avis.

If you saw the same booking with Alamo for £350 would you stick with Avis or choose your own car etc with Alamo?

Is £40 worth it in your opinion?

For £40 yes I would, reasons being

1. I choose what I want
2. Alamo has a much bigger presence at MCO hence more cars
3. For a swap out the CCC is covenient - Avis cannot compete with that.
4. Avis had a lot of stick last year ref overcharging. Plus it seems to be still happening and not just on BA bookings.
5. For first time renters the Alamo OLCI system is better. Avis preferred is not as good.

But. Nothing wrong with Avis and I would use them in the US but the business model Alamo uses is better.

I would vote Alamo for all Tom's reasons.

40 quid is 40 quid though so if you want the saving nothing wrong with that.

Only used Avis once in recent years and that was only because a BA/Avis fly-drive price was too good to ignore.

Yes you can STC with Avis if you join Avis Preferred but your car is still pre-allocated. It was also a bit of a nuisance having to join AP and link the BA and Avis bookings. Nowhere near as easy to STC as Alamo which is a couple of clicks and 5 minutes.

Also Alamo has by far the best Sunpass scheme of any of the major players.

For £40 I'd personally use Alamo.

Mick

Thanks all, Re-priced on Opodo and the difference was down to £32, so moved to Alamo (I've used them before so know that it's nice to have your own choice)

Now just stopping myself upgrading to a Tahoe (or equivalent) for an extra £120. Must... say... no !

Used Alamo loads of times (at Orlando and Tampa) with no trouble at all. Used Avis once this year... never ever again. I don't care how good the BA holiday price is, we will not be using Avis again. Multiple problems. This wasn't at Orlando, it was in North Carolina. But after he experience we had, we are put off Avis for life.
