Car insurance nightmare advice needed
Have today had an email from out new insurance company to say that they cancelled our car insurance on Friday. So we took out a policy for DH and me as a named driver 2 weeks ago. On the 27th June I received a letter in the post requesting the following by the 28th June: Photos of both driving licences Proof of no claims Copy of V5 log book Codes from DVLA on some online system I have never had to send these before? Proof of no claims but not the others. I took photos of everything requested and emailed it across as the deadline was the next day. Thought no more of it. Checked today and the email bounced back as there server rejected it as it was too big, however it went into my junk email. I have spent hours on the phone today. Basically they will not renew the policy and have cancelled it. This means for the rest of DH life he will have to tick he has had a cancelled policy which has added a 1/3 onto the price. This seems so unfair due to a genuine mistake. They wouldn't let me talk to a manager and i have raised a formal complaint. Is there anything that can be done as saying you have had a policy cancelled looks like you have hidden something and he has no point, 25 years NCD and no driving convictions? Thanks Kate |

Seems odd. I've only ever had to show NCD before :/ and I change my insurance every year.
Sorry I don't have any other advice but hope you get it sorted. Edited at 11:45 PM. |

Mmm. I am not sure whether not renewing a policy is the same as cancelling it?
I have had a policy renewal time out and the renewal option cancelled. But I had insurance with another company anyway. Are you covered now? Edited at 12:26 AM. |

You say it is your “new insurance company”, but also say they will not renew the policy, which indicates you were an existing customer. I agree with above, for better responses can you confirm if you had a policy cancelled or was it something else.

I'm guessing the OP means reinstate rather than renew.

This is getting more common now, checks as insurers are subjected to huge amounts of fraud with people setting up policies in fake names, fake addresses and lying about NCD and convictions and previous accidents.
Checks may be random, but may be targeted. Are you sure you disclosed everything when you incepted the policy- their systems will flag accidents and claims, even if you possibly never reported it to your own insurer. As I say though can also be random. Best thing you can do is see how the complaint goes.

We took out a new policy no a renewa with them so it was live for 10 days and then they cancelled it as the didn’t receive all the documents in time and now won’t reinstate it. I’ve had to get him insurance elsewhere at a premium now as had to tick he has had a policy cancelled. It seems so unfair due to a genuine error

We've had to do the same and I questioned it, in fact I didn't send them off and the company chased me up with a friendly phone call.
It sounds like they are being over the top cancelling the insurance, and then refusing to let you speak to a manager. I would raise it higher up. Usually an insurance company cancels insurance because you might not have given them the correct info when you took the policy out or you have been dishonest, but that isn't the case. Good luck |

Was the car registered to your husband and not you?
Anyway, as I say all you can do is see how the complaint progresses unfortunately.
