TV dinners vs eating at table

Table for us, always.

We always used to eat as a family at the table but now with just the 3 of us and shifts we all eat on our own in front of the tv. I eat at 5 , DS gets home about 6.30, eats about 7 and Dd gets home home about 8.15 and warms her tea up then ☹

We had a tiny house for years with no space for a table so had TV dinners with a folding table. DH hated it. Now we have a bigger house and a dining table we eat at the table unless DH is working lates (just us two) and then I tend to eat on my lap watching telly.

Having started eating at the table when together I love it, we chat more, we mull things over, we laugh more. I was going to put a TV in the kitchen/diner but now we have Alexa to play music quietly in the background as I love being social with the DH and would miss it terribly if we let old habits creep back in.

Do people think that eating in front of the TV means you just stare and drool at the screen? In my experience we talk just as much in front of the TV as we ever do at a restaurant or when we have used our table.

Plus eating whilst watching something to provoke conversation often results in great debates and can stimulate memories to chat about. Which also means we don't end up talking about work. I dislike talking about work while eating, and a lot of my relatives seem to love it. I'll have a 5-10 minute whine when I get in, but no more than that. Eating at a table has often resulted in looooong conversations about who in the office has done what. Not interested, quick 10 minute catch up then settle in front of the TV to watch something that will provoke a more varied and stimulating conversation.

We mostly eat on the sofa. I’m actually more comfortable on the sofa than at the table.

If we have anyone over we will eat at the table - if it’s us cooking. If it’s a takeaway then I will always ask where people prefer to sit.

We have some dinners though that we always eat at the table and they’re usually on a Sunday - Roast, steak pie, toad in the hole etc. No particular reason actually!

I think its a good idea when you have children to eat together. It gives you a chance to catch up with the days events. etc. NO PHONES at the table.
