Calling Villa Owners - Electric Car charging at your villa ?

Calling Villa Owners - Electric Car charging at your villa ?

I was looking at getting a Tesla rental when in the states (not going to do now for this trip) though was wondering what villa owners feel about a renter charging their car every night via a wall socket lead for say a minimum of 10 hours a night for a full charge or less for partial / top up charge.

Will we see higher costs across the board for villas as more adopt EV's or will it be on a case by case basis ?

Interested to understand how villa owners plan to manage this.

thanks

I would say ..they won't..same as 99% of UK homeowners won't. Pushing electric cars is fine as long as you provide the infrastructure to support it. At the moment public charging points are like hens teeth. Plus renters won't want to pay it ...its hard enough now as everyone expects all the bells and whistles but ask them to pay...no chance.

Not something we have been asked as yet but something we may have to consider
We'd need to do research into costs feasibility etc taking into account
Where to site charging point etc remembering villas can be unoccupied at times but electricity needs to stay on
Electricity is one of our biggest monthly out lays
We are just back from 5 weeks just 2 of us
AC at 78 I feel the cold hot water just a couple of hours in the morning
( on all,day for guests ) no pool or spa heat dishwasher on once a day
Washer 3 times a week dryer on once a week for bed linen and towels our bill,was$325 it can be way in excess of $450 with pool heat and AC going
Research into costs would need to be done
Sorry to say but the honesty of some guests thankfully very very few and far between would be a concern if they required charging or not

Very high level costs - Let 's assume you own the Model X with a 100 kWh battery and you pay the national average cost for power across the United States of 13 cents per kWh, then it will cost $13 for a full charge.

So around a$155 on a 2week stay and we didn't put that much in gas
In the full size car we had for 5 weeks out every day parks shopping state parks etc don't think many either owners or guests would be willing to pay that
And something DH has just said what if a hurricane / thunder storm knocks out the power for several hours or days something to think about

I am guessing that if renters were to somehow fully cover the costs of installing any charging equipment and the subsequent operational costs then owners would not mind. Electricity is not cheap. It is similar to pool heating - an expensive extra. I wouldn't expect many owners to even think about it until electric cars become very popular (there are few available to rent anyway) and they start losing bookings if they don't cater for the demand. You can't expect those who choose cars that use 'gas' to subsidise those who want to go electric.

Why do you want a Tesla? To be fashionable? To save a few dollars? Or to help to 'save the planet' by reducing your carbon footprint? If the latter (which would be a honourable reason), you need to stop flying across the Atlantic on fossil-fuel burning planes for a start! Electricity in the US is not 'green' - a lot is produced from fossil-fuels. Coal miners are Trump's base and protecting their jobs is one reason he pulled out of the Paris Agreement. Have you seen lots of wind turbines there? I haven't. Florida has plentiful sunshine, but where are all the solar panels on roofs and solar farms? Do you select a villa because it has solar power? Do you choose to go when you don't need pool heat? Do you choose villas that have very good thermal insulation to keep the heat out, e.g. triple glazing? Helen made a good point about hurricanes, which can result in mass evacuations, damage and loss of power for 2 weeks - hurricane-resilience is a key consideration there. You don't want to lose your means of transport on top of other problems. I would have thought there are many better ways of reducing your carbon footprint than hiring a Tesla in Florida!

I am just making a few points off the top of my head. I am not getting into a debate about it.

Well that's a bit of a rant...

The answer to the above direct question is because its impossible to get an extended test drive in the uk, plus I love cars.

This thread is not about consumer reasoning or justification about EV usage is it.

Have you checked to see what Tesla Superchargers are around the areas you are looking to stay. With an X or S, charging is included in the U.S. and would be significantly quicker than charging from a 110v outlet in the villa (they are currently testing 250kw Superchargers). Also Disney offer recharging points in each of their parking lots (chargeable). One nice side effect is that these are located close to the main entrances (certainly at HS, Epcot & AK).
