What kind of bank card have you got? A lot of them incur higher charges than others.

We use a Fairfx preloaded currency card mainly, along with DH's Halifax Clarity card. With the fairfx card I can load extra on it while away, by using my debit card to transfer the funds. Could this be an option?

We had a Revolut card, and ran out of money 2 days before we came home. Wages had gone into bank account, so I logged in, transferred money from bank account onto Revolut, no charge, and then just used that over the counter. (There is a charge for cash withdrawals at some ATM's though. Although not Wawa I seem to remember.)
Other cards - I'm not sure.

This happens to us too and we will just top up our Caxton card.
No fees for topping up and it credits to my Caxton card immediately
