ETA:Coming from a parent of four -- with two young ones, I would honestly just split the time between Boston and New York. Plenty fun for them and less hectic. How old are they?
We are away for 13 nights. I would like to fit in another location. 13 nights would be too much for me to spend between Boston and New York! They are young - nearly 5 and nearly 3. Used to moving about on holidays. Thanks for the info re water in Cape cod in May/ June. Would Jersey shore be much warmer? I see Ocean Pleasant Beach, NJ recommended on TripAdvisor. It looks an easy move from NY with NJ transit.

Or spend time in Philadelphia (easy short train trip from NY). Could do trip to Sesame Place. Or take train from NY to Lancaster and visit Dutch County. Lancaster probably better with a car

Our flights our booked and paid for flying into Boston and out of NY. Trying to formulate a plan incase we go ahead with the trip but not the cruise part.

Thanks again

Don't know about the water in NJ end of May. Probably find that info with a quick internet search? Never been to Sesame Place or Lancaster Dutch County.

Our experience in Philadelphia has been less exciting than Boston and New York. We saw some US history sights/museums, but for young children the Boston Tea Party museum was more fun and we stopped in their cafe for tea afterwards. Lots of smiles. I have heard good things about the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia. Philadelphia has a bunch of sweet playgrounds and a few fountains. (Boston and NYC also have some interesting playgrounds. Boston's fountains are far better.) Philadelphia has a zoo, but NYC's Bronx Zoo is on an entirely different plane than the one in Philadelphia. If you want to do a zoo, I would suggest the Bronx Zoo.

What about hiking? Do you all enjoy the mountains? That would be brilliant in May weather in Massachusetts or New York State.

OP: Just as a heads up. Today New York has 140 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus and several of their top universities have canceled classes (moving them online and telling students not to return after their spring break). Trump administration has it out in the media that they are *considering* encouraging Americans to avoid commercial air travel. This may simply be posturing, of course, as they are having disagreements with the airlines over passenger information and privacy. But who knows with Trump? You may want to reconsider your trip in May, as things are just ramping up and may not be resolved by then.
