Mexico- do they really have to wear trousers?

We’re off to Mexico, taking our DS for his 18th. We’ve heard mixed reports so I’d like to know others experience... Do they have to wear trousers at evening meal? I know the hotels advertise this but people say that’s not adhered too. What has your experience been?
Thank you

We went to Mexico last April/may! Went in a big group for my sister Wedding. We stayed in the TUI sensatori, they do advise trousers but all the men pretty much wore shorts and never got turned away at meal times. I think as long as the shorts are smarter and not too short you will be fine!

Ok so if I buy him a pair of trousers fir the better restaurants and have smart shorts for all others. I can observe what others are doing as I’d prefer one if the nice restaurants for his actual birthday. We’ll have been there 6 nights by then so will have that opportunity.
We planned to take a pair of shorts to the restaurants so he could change after.
Thank you.

We stayed at a Rui hotel in Mexico in 2016 I think and the rule regarding trousers in the a la carte restaurants was enforced. Saw lots of men being turned away to go and change.

We stayed at Dreams Tulum and they did enforce it in the higher end restaurants.

Not where we were. My DH wears smart tailored shorts and they weren't allowed!

We went to Mexico last September. Stayed in a resort with I think 7 a la carte restaurants. Had to wear long trousers in 2 of those. The others you could wear smart/casual shorts.

I think it very much depends on the hotel to be honest, I think you’re going to have to work on the principle that they will enforce it unless someone has been to the same hotel recently. We’ve been to 2 different hotels (they didn’t have the long trousers rule), they both enforced the stipulated dress codes.
