Getting another job although furlough ...

My son is 17 and has a permanent job although only contracted to 5 hrs along side college , he does a lot more when the place is open ... at the moment its obviously not ,so hes got himself a temp job at Tesco's to tide him over .Today his permanent employer has been in touch about the furlough process and they are going ahead with it ... because of this will he have to give his temp job up ? ... so basically can you have a temp job elsewhere whilst going through furlough from your permanent job ?

Yes you can. But it will depend on the employer. He’ll need to check with his permanent employer as to whether he is allowed to work for another company.

No worries - it's something we've been looking at as well, despite us getting 80%, due to the amount of money we bring home in overtime (OH has a standard OT payment of Ł900 a month minimum) and commission, for us the loss is a lot bigger than just 20% of out income. We've lost more than 50% which is less than ideal!

So it's something we've drastically been looking into.

Only during the hours you wouldn't normally be working for the company you are furloughed by i.e. I could work at the weekend as I don't normally work at the weekends.

Surely, it would be fraud if you got paid 80% from your employer then went and worked full-time at Asda and got another wage?

That's what I understand it to be.as you can normally have more than 1 job but not work the same hours. So if you worked 9am to 1pm and are furloughed you cannot get another job working these hours but 2pm to 6pm would be fine.

I was “advised” yesterday by the HR consultation company we use through work that 2 staff that we are furloughing cannot do other hours for us but could say take a temp job shelf stacking for tesco as an example.
I would double check though as employment law and individual contracts of employment, and company rules will no doubt differ...

Good luck

This doesn’t apply to me. I do not have set hours at either job.

This would have applied when I worked m-f 8-4 as it was in my agreement that I couldn’t work in my normal working hours in flexi time or AL.
However this does not apply to me now, I do not have a set pattern, my rota for both jobs change on a weekly basis and neither have put restrictions in place.

I can’t get a full time job in Asda because of my disability. our financial situation isn’t covered by the 80%.

People need to realise that not everyone’s situation is black and white. We have now lost more than we are bringing home.

The paperwork dd got sent about being furloughed stated that anyone who worked more than 1 job would not qualify for any pay under the scheme and I have read that they are concerned that people will be turning down the chance for temp work creating a shortage of workers where needed because it means they cannot receive pay from their normal employer under the scheme if they do so which confirms what dd has been told so I would def double check before taking on any work elsewhere.
