Under stairs toilet - cold pantry shelf
I posted a couple of months ago about turning under our stairs into a toilet (thank you coronavirus/virgin) and asked about using/removing a concrete shelf. Thanks to those who replied. I think Mr T Morrow advised that it would have originally been a cold pantry shelf.
We thought long and hard about what to do and in the end chose to keep the concrete shelf and go for a slightly industrial feel. The shelf was cleaned with a vinegar spray and also stone/tile cleaner then sealed with stone/tile sealer and it looks excellent compared to how it was. Here is the (almost finished) product. We're both really pleased with how it's turned out. DH has worked really hard at weekends and after work doing a lot of the work himself although we had a plumber to fit the sink and toilet. I spent a good few hours on my hands and knees scrubbing the existing floor tiles and scraping the grout out which DH then regrouted in black and they're really cool! We went for a high cistern toilet in the end and whilst it's not what I had in mind, I feel it works really well with the industrial feel plus it fits in the very small space! Scaffold boards and pipes were given to us by a friend so we cleaned them up and just bought the flanges. We're just waiting on the groundwork being done then the plumber can come and connect the waste and soil pipes up. DH will need to box the pipes in and we need the taps attaching. I'm on the search for a black toilet seat as the one that we ordered came with an oak one! |

Love 'industrial' looks. We have it it two rooms here and still love it 2 years on
You've captured that in your room there! And on top of that, we're all for up-cycling wherever we can! It preserves the 'history' of your property but brings it bang up to date. Well done

What would look nice and would protect the leading edge would be glass. A piece the exact width and depth of the shelf but with polished top and bottom leading edges. Gunned on with translucent silicone.
