Household insurance and social media

There seem to be mixed messages from insurers as to whether posting on any social media platform (I guess including the DIBB) information around the dates of your holiday means your household insurance will be invalidated. Some insurers say it will invalidate others say its not advisable but won't penalise.

I know that just because you are away your house may not be empty but has anyone suffered because of telling total strangers their holiday information?

I never put a Countdown on here and actually think it's crazy to do so.

Even if I post something that shows we are away I don't reinforce that by saying for how long.

As an aside I haven't seen anything from an Insurance Company saying not to post on social media and leaving the house empty but that's not to say there isn't any such warnings/rules.

Interesting. I don't post much on social media anyway, but prefer if DH posts holiday pics once we're back. He never listens though! In terms of the Dibb, i guess no one knows your identity on here unless you go out your way to provide it. So can't see how that would affect insurance if posting anonomously?

and ref posting on facebook etc cant see how this affects insurance as same as telling anyone workmates etc you are away?

If I use a countdown then my dates may a a day or so out (I wonder why) and only my passport etc have a correct DOB - rest may have all the right numbers but not necessarily in the right order (sort of thing)

On holidays it doesn’t matter as my apartment building is like Fort Knox to get in and has cameras everywhere. Plus when away I make use to the time to have my housekeeper go to town, garden do the decking etc ie every day atleast one other person was here on last vacation

You may be on holiday but whole household may not so dont see how this will affect insurance. Some people get a house sitter aswell.

Workmates, neighbours, taxi driver, kennels etc, there’s probably even more missing from that list. It seems kind of crazy that social media is seen as an issue when there are a whole host of (local) people who know you’ll be away!
