I've had constant tinnitus in both ears for more than 20 years, plus now have hearing loss in both ears as well. Strange fact, you can lose all your hearing, but you'd still have tinnitus.
Only thing that helps in the end is habituation: "Thanks to a mental process called habituation, you can get to a place where your tinnitus stops bothering you entirely, where your brain just stops paying attention to it and it fades from your awareness." I tried all sorts of different "therapies" and "sound machines", none helped me. My audiology dept has a hearing therapist, who I ended up seeing when I said that I just wanted to ram a sharp pencil into my ear... and I meant it. She was brilliant at helping me get started with my habituation, reminding me that there was nothing that I could do about it, so basically stop worrying and start living with it. The one thing that helped me with sleeping was having my TV on sleep timer for a few hours, set to a channel that I wasn't in the least bit interested in, so that my brain didn't try to actually listen and engage. Boring talking worked for me, where wave sounds, white noise or music didn't.

Another 20 + years sufferer of constant tinitus. Most of the time I can block it out, but of course it's louder now as I'm thinking about it

It’s strange as I don’t have a problem with it when I’m trying to sleep. It’s almost like it helps me sleep if that makes sense 😲. I went to an audiologist last week who advised I have some high frequency hearing loss. I feel I can hear perfectly! Very strange. Most of the time I forget it but I’ve been on my own today so I seem to have focused on it and it now sounds like a whistling kettle!

Another sufferer here
I was assessed & now wear hearing aids as hearing loss had made it worse. Has he seen an audiologist/ent assessment?. I have pulsatile one sided tinnitus & needed a ct scan to rule out rare tumour. Also use a sound ball to help mask sounds while trying to sleep ( naturecare type).It has different sounds & a timer and is a real lifesaver. My hearing aids can be programmed with a sound masker but I hated it. Please seek help from your GP initially if your suffering there are things available to help. Your friend should be assessed for treatment if not already done. Our local hospital has a specialised tinnitus clinic, the audiologist has tinnitus and really gets your issue. Edited at 08:37 PM. |

I’m a sufferer too 😩no advice, I had a scan in 2009 all good, but nights are the worst for me trying to get to sleep with constant ringing is so horrible, so wish there was a cure 😢

He’s been referred to the hospital by his dr & he calls ‘mind’ every day to talk to them but nothing seems to be working for him, he’s on a low dose of anti depressants now...
He does know someone personally who also has it & is living proof you can learn to live with this but at the moment he’s not very positive that he can carry on living with it...would a Suduko book help at all or word search !? Just thinking anything to help take his mind off the constant high pitch noise in his head - or am I way off the mark ? |

I could have written this myself. I do/have done all you have said. I can’t remember ever not having tinnitus having it since childhood. There were times I couldn’t distinguish between my tinnitus and tones sounded when having hearing tests. Sometimes I wake when the tv goes off and have to put it back on again. Different tones can make me unbalanced when they change or go louder. My ears screech consistently and makes me sensitive to certain noises. Loud clapping and whistling. Whistling gives me rage!

I suffer and find its worse when I am not occupied. High pitched sounds hurt my ear .Worst time is at bedtime so I either put the tv on a timer or use Alexa to play ocean sounds and set a timer for that. I tried a sound machine but it wasn't as successful as I hoped

I've had it for about 10 years, it's mostly white noise and i try to ignore that. Sometimes it changes to a different noise or the Count Basie Band and that's a problem, alcohol works on weekends though
