Las Vegas Car Hire

Afternoon all

Planning for our October trip (fingers crossed) we land at LAS in the evening, and plan to stay in a convenient hotel before picking up a car the next morning for a 2 day trip to the Grand Canyon south rim. Where is the best place for car hire, the airport or the strip? I note that the car rental centre is not at the airport but slightly off it, so wondering whether to:

a) stay at an airport hotel, ideally with a shuttle service to the car rental centre the next day.

b) taxi to a cheap strip hotel such as best western casino royale, then collect a car from hertz at the palazzo, which would make a convenient return as we are staying at the palazzo for 7 nights after the grand canyon.

Has anyone done this and has any tips? Thank you!

All the main strip hotels are within a stones throw of the airport. We’ve stayed at Palazzo and Wynn and had views of the runway which is fascinating! Unless you’re saving budget, there’s no advantage to staying at an airport hotel.

We’ve hired cars from both strip hotels and the airport. You have a little more choice at the airport and the rentals can be slightly cheaper. However for convenience (and we’ve always found good offers online) the hotel rental desks are easiest. It does depend where you’re staying though - but everywhere is a short cab ride away anyway

Thanks this is great info. It looks as though we could have a night at the Luxor for half the price of our airport hotel, so this is a good option, particularly as our provisionally booked airport hotel has no food options near it. When we return the car we will be heading to the palazzo, so I was thinking that hiring from hertz, who have a desk in the hotel apparently, would be a convenient option?

Personally I just stay at the Luxor for one night and then head back to the airport it’s quite close you can get a Uber or taxi to the hotel

I would pick up a car when you land. Messing about the following morning is just hassle and really you just want to get going as it is a long drive.

If you have a car you could get a budget hotel somewhere like South Point with low resort fees. This would still allow you to spend the evening on the strip if you wish (park at Miracle Mile Shopping centre) and still be able to get back to your hotel and be ready to just go the next morning, straight onto the freeway towards the Grand Canyon.

If you get a cab / Uber make sure you instruct them to go the non tunnel route or interstate as it can be the difference between a $14 journey and a $21 one.

Hi we used an uber to our hotel then walked to the mirage the next morning to pick up the car.
I would definitely do the same again, it allowed us to enjoy a few drinks on the plane and not to worry about navigating the traffic after a long day.
we used Avis and it was very easy.

Strip traffic is horrible and it’s always less hassle picking up a car the next morning at a less busy Strip location than the airport . Additionally some Strip hotels now charge guests for parking .
I wouldn’t stay out as far as South Point but somewhere like the Orleans would give you free parking, easy free access to the Strip on their shuttle and lower prices. Orleans tends to be my go to hotel for a first night as it’s easy to find everything, good choice of places to eat from a steak loft to a food court as well as everything in between and free parking for fast escape the next morning.

I wasn’t over keen on the Luxor when I stayed there , so I wouldn’t restrict yourself to just looking at that one (especially if you suffer even mild travel sickness ! )

We took an Uber to the car rental place on the day we collected our car. Super cheap as it’s so close by.

There’s a much better choice than at the hotels, most hotels only use one company, so the price is higher as there’s no competition. For the distance you will travel via Uber, it’s worth the “airport” collection
