I am really struggling as to why people would pay big money to fly into Melbourne and then drive/bus/whatever up to Orlando.

Surely it would be less hassle, possibly quicker (and a great deal cheaper) to simply fly an indirect into MCO via Atlanta, Philly or similar?
3 hour layover coming in and 1 hour flying home.

It is 1.5 hours drive from Melbourne to our condo, and only 45 minutes drive to Birmingham airport from home, for me that is worth paying more for than flying indirect or flying from an airport 3-4 hours drive from home and getting it cheaper.

Sorry, me again I've done a search on BA for a fly drive for your dates, and the price is the same as just our flights but flying from Gatwick so the extra drive time and petrol to save the £350 we'll spend on car hire so it is a no brainer for us!

That is where our differences lie.

Indirect for me will be from Heathrow at 5 hours driving.

Direct would normally be Gatwick at 6 hours 20 ish, so indirect saves me time transiting to and from the airport.

Heathrow means a cheaper overnight hotel and cheaper parking.. another bonus for indirect.

Then we get to the four airline tickets, where the savings on flights are magnified… x4.

The above savings then translate towards the next vacation!

I normally wait till flights out but with so many people rebooking from this year and last we decided to book flydrives with Virgin holidays a few weeks back. LHR to MIA 2/4 to 15/4 (our school hols). 4 adults with a mid size suv all inclusive £2700. We are happy to drive up as 2 of us will be insured to drive. It was more than 3 x the price if we flew into MCO!

That sounds a really great price. If staying the night in the MIA area, have a look at Buffalo Tigers airboats. They are very, very different to the tame offerings around Orlando.

My Boston trip report has a review of it near the end. You will find it in my signature.

I gambled with a Virgin Flydrive to Miami about 6 weeks ago for August 2022. I just had a feeling for big rises for 2022.

You may or may not remember, but I did the same... That basic price currently hasn't really changed, coming in around £650pp. However, the same dates into Orlando are craaaaazzzzyyyy... this morning (Aug 20, 14 nights) is over £1500pp...
Easter flydrive to Orlando is a similar price at around £1500pp, even into Miami is a staggering £1100.

It's just not affordable...

I haven't always found flights to be cheapest immediately on release, I booked our May 2020 flights in August 2019 for £400pp and, whilst i'm not under any illusion of getting that price for next year, circa £1k per person (we don't plan to go over xmas or easter) would be too much for us. I'd consider other airports than our nearest (Manchester) or flying indirect first.
