Alamo Brits
Hi Guys
I see that a lot of people on here seem to book through this site. I have a copy of the book and have looked at prices. I must say that at first glance they seem more expensive than a lot of other car hire companies. e.g. £674 for an SUV for 2 weeks? Then if I select one I am charged £60 to hire a booster seat for 2 weeks and £120 for sat nav - this seems to be daylight robbery! The whole car hire thing seems a bit confusing for me. I suppose what I am asking is .. 1. does everyone on here think that the Alamo site is good value (I am happy to trust the opinions of more experienced travellers like you lot) If not then which is consistently the best value car hire. 2. Do you know if they tend to do a discount if you hire 2 cars (as I need 2 SUV's) thanks a lot you guys are really helping me to plan ahead |

Car hire is a lottery! You pays your money and takes your choice.
There are some really cheap deals out there from Thrifty, Dollar and I kid you not right down to a local company called 'rent a wreck'! The 3 big players are Alamo, Avis and Hertz. They take a huge share of the US market and thus tend to have better satisfaction ratings. Most of us choose Alamo as you can choose your own car from the row and can strike it lucky and get a brand new car, but you also can with Dollar etc. The key is to book very early and use a website that allows free cancellations. Thus if it pops up cheaper you cancel and take your business elsewhere. Loads of us do this. With regards to 'extras' it's not just the US that charges a Premium for this but Europe as well. hence most people take their own seats and sat navs etc. No discounts for multiple bookings sorry. I hire 3 times per annum out there albeit this year it's 4 times. All of my rentals with Alamo were booked 11 months in advance and the prices have done nothing but go up since I booked.

Thanks Mr Morrow ...
Re: booster seats... do they let you on board the plane with it as hand luggage? or would it need to go into the case? |

When we took my Granddaughter her booster seat was bagged by Virgin and went in the hold. All free.

It would go in the hold at no cost. I've never had to do it but they are usually put in a large plastic sack.
