What, no bears? - Canadian Rockies Road Trip Aug/Sept 2019 - Day 5
Index is here
Day 5 – Thursday 29 August 2019 Kamloops - Revelstoke We were awake again just after 7am. Breakfast was included in the hotel rate and was both hot and continental buffet including one of those make your own waffle irons that you see in hotels in Florida. We had a good breakfast then checked out around 10am. We called at a Walmart intending to buy a Sim card for our phones but completely forgot about it while we were in there and instead bought notebooks and pens for DS who’s at University and some travel sickness tablets. We programmed the Sat Nav with our first stop of the day – the Shuswap Pie Co in Salmon Arm. This was a suggestion that I had picked up from TripAdvisor. We called at Subway to pick up a sandwich for lunch, topped up the petrol tank at a nearby petrol station ($42.65 CAD for 33 litres) then set off on Highway 1. We were not far out of Kamloops when I had my first wildlife sighting – a deer sitting in the grass verge at the side of the highway. Unfortunately it all happened so fast that I didn’t get a photo. We reached Salmon Arm around 12.30pm and managed to park right outside the Pie shop. The shop sold both meat and fruit pies. The aroma inside was making our mouths water but we decided to eat our Subway sandwich first and have pie for dessert. DH ordered strawberry and rhubarb and I ordered blueberry and peach. We both had ice cream on the side. The pastry was lovely and light and very flaky. We set off again around 1.30pm heading for my next stop – D Dutchmen Dairy just outside Sicamous (again a tip from TripAdvisor) which sold 40 different flavours of old fashioned ice cream made from milk produced by the cows in the dairy. We pulled off the highway towards the dairy around 2.30pm and there was quite a queue inside the shop for ice creams. DH had Cherry Cheesecake and I had Lemon Pie. This was another great suggestion for a stop from TripAdvisor and very welcome as it was quite warm again today. We reprogrammed the Sat Nav with our final stop on our route to Revelstoke which was a place called Craigellachie (pronounced Kray-Gell-a-Key with a hard G). Craigellachie is most famous for being the site where they drove in the last spike which marked the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railroad from east coast to west coast. We only had a brief stop here for photos and then set off again for Revelstoke. When we reached Revelstoke we were going to drive up the Meadows in the Sky Parkway however, as we approached we changed our minds and decided to head for our hotel first which was on the outskirts of Revelstoke just off Highway 1. We were staying at the Coast Hillcrest which I had booked online as BA did not offer any hotels in Revelstoke. We checked in the hotel, found our room and unloaded the car. We had amazing views of Mount Begbie from the balcony outside our room. We then decided we would try the Meadows in the Sky parkway before dinner. We headed to towards the entrance of Mount Revelstoke National Park and then realised we did not have our park passes. We decided to risk it in case they let us through anyway but, as we reached the entrance, we noticed the barrier was down. It was now 5.30pm and the Parkway was closed for the day so we couldn’t go up anyway. We drove back through the town looking for somewhere to have dinner and having not found anything we fancied decided to eat at the hotel instead. This turned out to be a good choice. DH ordered roast chicken breast on risotto and I ordered the 8oz AAA Alberta Top Sirloin with wild mushrooms and mash. We also had a ½ litre carafe of Pinot Grigio. Both the food and the wine were excellent and the bill came to $80.13 CAD. The steak was huge and had no fat/gristle so you could eat every last bit of it! We were both stuffed so headed back to our hotel room and sat watching Hollywood Game Night starring Jane Lynch (of Glee fame). |
