Advice please - alarm for elderly parent

I live 2 minutes' walk away from my parents. Mum is confined to a hospital bed at home, with carers coming in 4 times a day. Her dementia is fairly static at the moment and her many physical needs are being taken care of.

My Dad is actually more of a worry. He's 90 and becoming ever more frail. The daily slog of looking after Mum is taking its toll. We do everything we can but we both work full time. Lately in this hot weather his asthma has been really bad and he finds he is exhausted much of the time.

A friend has suggested he get one of those alarms you wear round your neck or in your pocket, in case he has a fall or other problem.

I have only vague ideas about what they are and how they work. Can anyone recommend a particular one?

Sorry to sound harsh but will he wear it? My mum had one but she didn't put it on until she was showered and dressed. Unfortunately she fell downstairs going for breakfast and laid there for most of the day. We have said these days it would have been better if she'd have had an Alexa.

We got ours for my Father via Lincolnshire/Kesteven council - they sorted it all out including what alarm is best (he had one round his wrist like a Velcro bracelet - even wear it in the shower) lock box for outside as they need access to house keys and response service - Father obviously had to pay plus a monthly/quarry response fee but it was brilliant and literally a life saver many times over. When pressed it dials the service and they speak over loud speaker dotted round the home - if they dont get a reply they send an urgent call to the helpers plus inform NOK

They even came round to check the smoke alarms and changed the battery !

My dad has just got one following a stroke but he wears it on his wrist like a watch. If you look on your local council website and search for Telecare it should take you to the relevant department or I think Age UK do them as well.

They can be worn in the shower

I use a company called Lifeline 24 for my dad. He wears a watch which also has a fall detector. It has been a blessing as when he has his seizures it activates the alarm through the shaking and I am notified. I get a call about once every fortnight so it is well worth the money for peace of mind x

I got the Lifeline for my mum. I had to explain to her that she needed to keep it on at all times though. At that point she could no longer shower, otherwise I’m sure she would have taken it off. It was very useful though and gave me peace of mind.
