Very excited to spot your report as I’ve loved the ones you’ve done before.

We’ve just booked flights to NY for a 5 night trip next Easter but no hotel booked yet. Taking lots of notes as that food tour looks great. DS will be 16 so looking for things to do that aren’t just sight seeing 😀

Day 4 New York

Monday 14th February

Breakfast Hotel

Hotel breakfast again. The hot items varied each day.

Another bitterly cold day. We did the One World Observatory first then 9/11 museum, which was obviously a very sombre experience but we were all glad we went.

Lunch Los Tacos No 1

Enjoyed this for lunch. You order at counter and eat standing up they have bars to lean against.

We did some shopping on 5th Avenue this afternoon.

Amazon Go

DH went in Amazon Go and got some snacks including a cronut. You swipe in and it charges your Amazon account rather than pay at a till. He was happy to see one and go in.

Magnolia Bakery

Hummingbird cake was good (they do this at Homecoming at Disney Springs) Daughter had a cupcake. Ate the cake back at the hotel while having a rest.

Pizza takeaway

In the evening we did a Harbour cruise with Circle Line. Really enjoyed the cruise.

We got bus back to hotel and went to nearby Pizza restaurant we had seen earlier but it had closed early.

It was late so only pizza place open was a 99c place. It was $12 for a full pizza. Think we paid $15 inc 3 drinks and took it back to room to eat, they gave us paper plates and napkins.

It was freezing cold and we were hungry, but it was much better than expected.

Day 5 New York

Tuesday 15th February

Breakfast - Hotel

Savoury and a waffle today again.

It was bitterly cold again today. Last day in New York. We did an open top bus tour this morning.

Magnolia Bakery

We got off at the Edge which had a shopping centre below. We had coffee and cake whilst we thawed out.

I had a red velvet cupcake which was ok but then ate half of his Confetti cake which was really good. Look at the size of it!

Husband had a Farmer Jack coffee from Jack’s Stir Brew which was an Americano with two triple ristrettos so he was buzzing!

We all loved the Edge viewing platform. Walls and part of the floor are glass. It was a real sun trap.

Day 5 New York - Continued

Shake Shack lunch

This was in the shopping centre where the Edge was. We’d all liked it the other night so had pretty much same again. All enjoyed it again. Not cheap was about $50 for 3 of us.

We popped in to Amazon Go as well

Wafles and Dinges

Waffle sitting in the cold but sunny weather in Bryant Park. Had a WMD – Waffle of Massive Deliciousness.

Had a rest back at hotel then watched the Lion King on Broadway.

Angelo’s Pizza

It was late after show, we ate nearby and shared a massive Pizza and some garlic bread. Enjoyed it but we were tired.

DAY 6 Off to Washington DC

Wednesday 16th February 2022

Breakfast – Hotel

Last NY hotel breakfast. We also stopped at CVS for some snacks for the train.

We moved to Washington DC for our last 3 nights. We had been before but 20 years ago.

Amtrak train from Moynihan Hall. This was out first time on train in USA. We booked via wanderu app. It was $29 each single way out and I think $39 each on the Saturday we came back. The train was nice – big leather seats with chargers and Wi fi. Dining car had tables in. Would do again, we were impressed. Train was 3.5 hours.

Lunch – train snacks
We got a Starbucks at the station to take on train, ate snacks for lunch and I did get a cheese platter from dining car.

We stayed Hyatt Place Washington DC/Whitehouse booked on booking.com. After getting settled we had a nice walk around, we were 2 mins from Whitehouse. Washington is a real contrast to New York. Much more spacious and quieter.

Dinner - Hill Country BBQ
We had a look what was nearby to eat with good reviews and opted for BBQ for a change. No need to show covid pass to eat inside in Washington. It’s a chain there’s one in NY too.

It was happy hour - I had a strong Margarita, he had beer. We shared a Pitmaster combo and got an extra couple of sides. The German potato, mac and cheese and cornbread were really good.

Day 7

Washington DC

Thursday 17th February 2022

Breakfast

Hotel had an included breakfast, so we ate there. Hot and cold food. It was a bit fancier than NY but out of the two we preferred NY. Washington breakfast was much busier.

Had a walk over to White house and saw the Presidents helicopter taking off and secret service guards on the roof.

We did the National Archives in the morning. Free but needed pre booking. Saw the Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence.

We had a ticket for a 48 hour hop on hop off bus. So did part of the bus tour. It was cold but not as cold as NY.

Day 7 - Continued

Washington DC

Late Lunch Cheesecake Factory

This was 5 mins walk from hotel. Really enjoyed this. He had a massive breakfast burrito and I had the lunch sized Louisiana chicken pasta. I had strawberry lemonade to drink which was lovely.

We shared the coconut cream pie cheesecake for dessert, server kindly split one portion over 2 plates for us.

Cheesecake selection:

More bus tour afterwards.

That evening we had a chill out in hotel room watching tv, just had some snacks.

Day 8

Washington DC

Friday 18th February 2022

Breakfast – Hotel

Some pics from included breakfast buffet. French toast sticks were nice. Didn’t try grits.

It was really cold again today.

We’d booked the Library of Congress (free) but were early so went in Starbucks to keep warm. I got a mug.

US Capitol was closed due to Covid so we had a walk around outside then on the hop on hop off bus again.

Saw the Jefferson and Vietnam memorials.
