We did a VIA train tour with Cosmos that went from Toronto, (including a Niagara Falls trip ) to Jasper followed with a coach tour of the Rockies and ending in Vancouver. Fantastic value and most things food etc, tours included. You slept on the train and had some fantastic views. We did continue with an Alaskan cruise at the end too. Banff was great, saw grizzlies and went on a Glacier walk.

We went in 2019, Calgary, banff, Jasper, headed over to Edmonton (DH wanted to do, I wouldn’t again) and back to Calgary in 10-11 nights.
In banff we did a school bus hop on hop off tour that covered bow river falls, Johnston canyon, lake Louise, etc - it was great, saw grizzly bear just eating it’s way through the dandelions…..highly recommend Banff was great, stayed 4 days and explored, onto Jasper stopping at the Glacier enroute again great day and in Jasper white water rafting was a winner with my then 11 year old….. best by far though was seeing a big black bear just making its way along the road inches from cars (who gave him a wide berth or stopped) on way to Lake Maligne and then later a mum with her 3 cubs….just amazing We did this to have a break from Florida and we amazed ourselves how much we all enjoyed it, Brilliant memories, fab holiday and we all want to go again and include Vancouver next time….. We went in early June….. plan as much or as little, we loved doing the trails and having a picnic at the lakes, hire kayaks, and paddle board etc…..in June the lake had just thawed and per picture perfect glacier blue….. We were there in May. I’m planning on getting my act together & write the trip report soon.
We had a fantastic time. We flew into Vancouver - did a few days there visiting Granville island, Stanley Park & Gastown Then we did a drive to the sea to sky gondola, the views were spectacular We then drove up to Clearwater & stayed in Wells Gray Park overnight - much nicer than staying in Kamloops & it gave us the opportunity to visit some of the waterfalls which the park is famous for. We then drove on to Jasper stopping at mount robson & rearguard falls on the way Jasper & surroundings was amazing. Scenery is stunning. Maligne canyon was a particular highlight. We stayed 4 nights then drove the icefields parkway to Lake Louise & on to Banff & Canmore. The views are spectacular, breathe taking. Stop at as many places along the way as you can. The Gypsy app which has already been mentioned is brilliant - we learnt so much & found additional places to stop from the commentary. Whilst staying in Canmore we also visited YOHO NP - Emerald lake & natural bridge. The Jasper & Banff NP Facebook group is a brilliant source of information. If you are in the parks for 7 days it works out cheaper to buy a years pass rather than pay daily. As there were 4 of us we just got the group pass which covers up to 7 in 1 car. We did a one way car rental - Vancouver to Calgary then flew Calgary to Vancouver on our return. Have fun planning. I’m keeping an eye on flights because our NP passes are valid until April & we’d love to go back |

We`ve just come back from 17 days in Canada. One of my best friends moved to Calgary over 40 years ago, and we`ve never been before, more fool us!
We flew to Montréal and spent 3 nights there, then caught the train to Quebec and spent 3 nights there. Both cities were definitely worth visiting, absolutely lovely. We then flew to Calgary via Toronto. We had 2 nights at Carole's before heading off for a road trip. We did 2 nights in Banff, 1 at Jasper and 1 at Saskatchewan River Crossing. Carole said she`s never seen the cost of accommodation so high. Stuff they`d normally pay $200 for was $400 or even more. We then ended up back in Calgary for 4 nights, where we went to the stampede for 3 days The whole thing was totally amazing. We were luck to have "locals" who know the place inside out to ferry us about and take us to some places not on the usual tourist routes. I can`t pick a favourite, everything was amazing. The Gypsy app was great though, deffo worth having. We saw 5 brown bears, 2 grizzlies, and loads of elk, goats, beavers etc. The scenery just takes your breath away. We`ll certainly be going back, hopefully for a month when we retire |

Late to the party
I did the rockies and an Alaskan cruise in 1997. I was young and I doubt it’s changed very much! Things I wish I’d known: Don’t expect good weather. My holiday was July and it was overcast and drizzly the whole time. Normal for there we were told and the reason it’s so lush just like the U.K. it’s not a beach holiday but I do think people shouldn’t go expecting glorious blue skies like the brochures. It’s a LOT of hours on transport between places. At first this is exciting as the scenery is ace but even though it’s spectacular it can wear thin after days and days of travelling. Don’t expect to see much wildlife. We didn’t see a bear or a moose or anything else remotely interesting all holiday. The only time we did was on an organised tour off the Alaska cruise to see killer whales in the bay swimming wild (which we did and was awesome) plus a hump back whale and bald eagles in the same trip. There was nothing to be seen in the Rockies. On an organised tour you don’t always get to stop to take in the scenery when and where you want. We felt rushed sometimes I think that was the downsides really. Bits I liked: Vancouver is ace. I could spend a few days here Going up onto a glacier was awesome The icefield road is a stunning drive Lake Louise is breath taking Banff has lots going on. The gondola is good. We walked along the river here as well Jasper was very Ansel Adams and picturesque Moraine lake is also stunning Tame white water rafting was a real highlight of the trip We were lucky enough to have a helicopter ride as part of our tour and this was very special. I was very lucky to stay in all the fairmont hotels when I did this holiday. All I can say is wow. If you can afford it then do it. I think the price is prohibitive now! I probably sound a little negative in some of what I’ve said but I think as I was young (about 20) I expected it to be like the brochure - blue sky, bears round every corner, an experience every half hour. Obviously it’s not like that in reality! It is a fantastic holiday and top of my list to re-do once the kids leave home (no way they’d put up with the hours of travel and “another” stop for a stunning view! ). I think we will do a self drive so we can pick and choose what we visit and how long we spend in each place. No way it will be the Fairnont chain but in reality you don’t want to be in your room too much as it’s all outside! Have a wonderful time |

We went in May and had fantastic weather. Snow on the ground and sunny blue skies except for 1 day, on the cruise they even opened the roof over the pool. Saw grizzly bears and black bears plus a wolf, no moose though.
