It depends which card you have. If it’s the free card then the voucher will only be valid for 12 months. If you have the premium card it will be valid for 24 months so could be used for your 2024 trip. You get the best value from the voucher if you travel in a higher cabin. By the time you pay the fees and taxes you don’t save much on an economy ticket.

Also, if it's Amex with the free card it's only valid in economy. Not sure about other cards

The paid for card is for any cabin. We've just ours to book return in business to LAX in Feb, to coincide with a Hawaiian cruise.

The 'taxes' you pay have gone up recently, it cost us just shy of £1700 for the 2 of us, plus 137500 Avios thanks to our companion voucher. However, given that we would have had to pay for flights regardless, those charges probably aren't much more than it would have cost for an economy flight.

Head for Points is the best website to find out about the companion vouchers, how they work etc.

It was worth it for us, we booked reward seats for me, OH and 9 year old for April to San Diego returning from Phoenix. Cost us around £1100 rather than the 3k plus it was for flight only!

It's tax and charges - the tax is nowhere near the actual taxes and charges - see this page - tax for departing UK is £185 compared to £85 for economy long haul, and the higher fee is for PE, BC, FC. Head for points page about charges + taxes

We have the paid for Amex, and I have bought Avios points when on offer to use our 2-4-1 vouchers for CW flights.

Taxes for both of us on USA flights used to be £1350 - last flight was 2018 - and for next year about £1750 for the two of us.
Due to pandemic I had lot's of vouchers and have used for domestic Business class to London and also Rome in 2019.

This year my son and his partner joined our household account (he also has BA amex non paid for but plenty points) and I used 2 of my vouchers for the 4 of us for next year.

You can also book flights for other people if they are in your friends and family group with your points - but not voucher, as you have to be on flight with voucher users (well that was the rule - don't think it's changed)

Can't you upgrade to the paid card, get the 2 year voucher, then downgrade again to the free card after a couple of months once you've hit the spend.
A portion of the annual fee might be refunded pro-rata?
