We were all disappointed with Disney, dare I say. Very crowded and just not Disney for us. We like WDW. I think if we had stayed very close, we might have enjoyed it more. Look at hojo hotel. It is more or less opposite the park. It was very busy when we went August. If I went again, I would go at a quieter time if year and stay central.

My DS who was 10 liked Universal and Warner Bros.

We all loved San Diego. I bought a go San Diego Card and we used that.

We went to California for 2 weeks and it wasn't long enough.

The traffic in LA is horrendous, so try and stay as close to the attractions you want to visit as possible. Another favourite day was a visit to Venice Beach area on a weekend. Often it took an hour to get to Disney and we were staying in Anaheim, at the Staybridge suits. From this hotel it took 2 hours to get to Universal. Or Warner Bros, or Central LA.

We only stayed at two hotels, as my DH didn't want to keep sucking and unpacking.
