Gallbladder Removal Op
My 78 year old Mum had an operation last Wednesday to remove her gallbladder.
She's quite sore still in one place (it was keyhole) but the biggest problem is having the runs. I know it's a side affect of the op, but wondered if anyone has had any experience of this operation and how long it took to settle down? Shes eating a low fat diet as advised, but still having to rely on Imodium! Poor old soul seems to be losing weight every day 😣

Your poor Mum 😔 I had the operation 4 years ago and felt normal pretty much immediately afterwards, I was only 30 though. I am definitely more ‘sensitive’ to very fatty foods now but did not have that reaction afterwards. Is your mum home now? If so it might be worth speaking to her GP in case she has picked up an infection in hospital?

I had mine removed in 2013 due to gallstones. I had real problems for weeks afterwards (I had acute pancreatitis as the gallstones travelled across). It took a long time for things to settle down and I was half your mums age. Her gp might be able to give her something to help until her body gets used to missing a bit of itself. Hope she feels better soon.

My mum, brother and daughter all had this op and were fine by the time they were discharged a few days later. If it is watery have you asked for her to be tested for C.Diff, I work in supported housing and we recently had someone discharged with this which they picked up in hospital.

jelly babies & marshmallows are know to help "thicken" stools but don't know if low fat diet allows them.

I had mine removed nearly 3 weeks ago. I had the opposite where I was constipated for the 1st week.
Only issue I have now is after eating my stomach can sometimes gurgle really loudly and feel sick depending on what I've eaten. I'm still slightly sore mostly when I touch my scars or around that area. Can be sore sometimes when I move as well. |

I had mine out by keyhole surgery as well. In your mum's case I would get the gp to call. Sounds like she may have picked up an infection. Hope she recovers quickly.

Thank you everyone, for taking the time to reply
I've actually just been round to see her and shes perked up vastly, and the runs seems to be settling down, so maybe it is just a 'time' thing. I did suggest to her that she should get a course of antibiotics but being 78 and stubborn she said she will wait, as its a lot better than two days ago so she just thinks it will settle down by itself. The hardest thing is finding things for her to eat that are very low fat, not spicy, and not high in carbs as she is also a type 2 diabetic!
