Maybe not the nearest but we did a day trip to Anna Maria island. Was about 2.5 hours each way but so worth it. Was paradise. Really nice old fashioned America island and beach.

We would say Clearwater Beach
The gulf water is warmer than the Atlantic. It is a lovely beach, also boat rides near by and also can go to see Winter the dolphin at the Clearwater Aquarium. A good amount of parking and plenty of places to eat. A great place to see the sunset over the water. Takes about 80 minutes to get there from the Disney down the I-4. Melvin and Lesley

CSR is very central for both coasts. It depends if you want to swim, beach walk or anything else?
By the way don't fall for the west coast sea is warmer statement. E.g. today the Atlantic coast is much warmer by at least 5C. |

If you want beautiful beaches without the hassle and bustle of being in or near a city, I can recommend Fort Desoto State Park.
Loads of picnic and bbq areas, good quality toilets, a couple of food outlets... beautiful beaches, cycle routes with bike hire, kayaking, fishing and the history of the fort. Miles and miles of unspoilt beaches can be seen on numerous YouTube videos. |

Depends how far you want to drive. Cocoa Beach is closest at about 1 hour drive time. Clearwater Beach is generally more highly regarded (and deservedly so) but it's almost twice the distance. If I was going for just the day, I would rather have those two extra hours on the beach than in the car and would just go to Cocoa.
