Does anyone make their own sushi?

Love to eat it but never made it. Any tips on recipe and kit?

DS and I did a sushi making evening at Waitrose cookery school a couple of years ago.

I can try to find the recipes if you would like. Main kit is sharp knife, bamboo rolling mat - a couple of quid from Waitrose and a sturdy baking sheet to cool rice on. The teacher said the main thing is to use really fresh ingredients and a good sushi su which is the seasoning liquid you put into the rice! We haven’t made it since but thinking of doing it for a family Christmas activity!

Here are some pics, they were delicious😁

This was my first try earlier in the year. I wrapped my bamboo mat in cling film as the mat is really hard to clean, if it’s in cling film, you just throw the cling film away afterwards.

It’s easier to make than I thought but follow the instructions on the rice packet carefully. It takes a while to prep, washing it, soaking it, cooking it, cooling it.

I found recipes on the internet, easy ones to begin with and tastes really good. I had to go to a couple of supermarkets to get what I needed, rice vinegar, pickled ginger, mirin etc.

Amazon have some kits if you prefer. The more you make, the easier it gets and the more creative with fillings. I’ve had quite a few goes now, they disappear as soon as I make them

Enjoy, it’s worth a try.

i eat/make sushi regularly. i'm ok at it, been to a lesson at yo sushi a few years ago... they probably still do classes if you have one nearby, its definitely worth the money for what you learn (plus, you get to eat it/take it home as well as a rolling mat of your very own!)

here's some i didnt make. i can only hope to be this good at some point!

first off from a posh place in kensington we went to a few weeks ago. it was absolutely stunning. b y far the best i've ever had!

then a couple of boxes from our local place, urumaki. by far the best youll find in nottingham. we've ordered it twice (both were birthday meals at home)

Right - I feel the need to confess here.

I am weird - I could just stop typing now but it would not tell you much to do with the topic!

I have a morbid fear of vomiting, and avoid things that I thinks increases the risk.

Sushi is one thing that falls into the catagory of things to be avoided.

However, am SO weird on this, there is a twist...

I would never have even tried sushi but on our Tokyo Disney trip 2 years ago, I was very kindly embarrassed into eating it, on the Japanese ANA plane, by the stewardess I made friends with on the plane, as she used to work in EPCOT.

I love sushi, well the stuff I had as it tasted of the sea rather than yucky fish - it made such a difference to places we ate in once we got to Japan.

Now, in my weird head, I will happily eat sushi again in Japan but never in the UK - why? In the UK it could have been prepared by someone who worked 2 weeks ago in John Lewis selling me a sofa!

I said I was weird, and the tale of how I got embarrassed into eating it on the plane, is not one I come out well from lol ...

What a fantastic story. Not wired at all. I can not eat pork joint but can eat pork sausage. We all have our little ways.

Wow! Never thought of having it delivered. Will look at booking a class. Think that’s the best idea.
