Any Sainsbury’s employees?

Or anyone that cares to comment.
Sainsbury’s yesterday issued this directive to all staff…

Social Events Cancellation

It is with a heavy heart that I have to confirm that all social work events must be cancelled due to the current coronavirus situation.

I know this will be hugely disappointing to hear and not the message anyone wanted to hear - definitely not the news I wanted to be sharing.

To confirm the quiz this Sunday 5th will be cancelled and re-arranged into the New Year.

I must also be clear that all events arranged that involves colleagues meeting socially must be cancelled - any locally arranged meals/drinks included. I know there are parties and meets arranged and I know deposits etc. will have been paid - if this is the case, please come and discuss it and we will support you...

We are asking for your support and buy in on this... remember, a small number of colleagues failing to comply will have a huge impact on the larger majority. Please support each other in making this happen...

Thank you all for your support & understanding!

We’re threatened with gross misconduct if we meet/socialise outside of work hours.
My manager actually rang the restaurant that 12 colleagues were booked for next Tuesday and cancelled the booking.
I’m livid! “Sainsbury’s are being proactive” is what we were told this morning!

How can they tell us what to do in our own time? I wish I was in the union now, I’d love they’re opinion.

I don't work in Sainsbury , but we had a request to do the same... though not a directive.

In a small pharmacy (under 12 staff) if we all go out together it could cause huge problems if there was one person there who had the new variant.

Busiest time of the year for us over the next 2 weeks.

They walk amongst us. Like a noisy fart, best ignored.

They cannot dictate what an employee does out of hours unless it brings the company in to disrepute.

I would throw the gauntlet down to them and say crack on Son if you want to make an issue of this. Then I would give the Daily Mail a ring.

Absolute madness. It’s one thing to cancel events organised by the company and to request that people not socialise with colleagues, it’s something else to try and mandate it. I say try, as I cannot see they can dictate on your personal social plans, or take action if you ignore their request. So much for this Christmas being better than last!
