Are you back before the end of July? If so and you have a UK or RoI P/P (or about another 130 odd nations) it only has to be valid for the period of travel.

Not that bad really. Its a cup of coffee in Starbucks almost.
I know you are right, but it’s just a bit annoying really when they used to roll over up to 9 months.

They need to start selling “9 year 6 month” passports as that all you will ever get if you want to travel on it lol

Not to the USA. To be honest this is asked monthly on here. Here is the official notice from the US C&BP. The USA Embassy in the UK site and the UK Gov site say exactly the same thing.

cbp.gov/sites/default/fi...date122017.pdf

ESTAs only need to be valid for the day of travel to the USA.

Then he is good to go as is assuming a British Subject Passport. It just needs to be valid for the duration of travel.

You haven’t needed 6 months on your passport for nearly 10 years.

We haven't used a TA since our first visit in 1990 but from what I've read on here over the years from Dibbers who have it seems that some can be a little "lazy" or "economical with the truth" whichever you consider to be less offensive.

A few countries not in the 6 month club do need 6 month's grace to visit the USA. Similarly some holders of UK passports need 6 months grace to visit Malaysia for instance. Some (not all ) TAs take the line of least resistance and just say "you will need 6 month's grace" without asking further.
