Our DS got A Levels in Maths, Physics and Design and Techology.
Went to do a degree in Aircraft Engineering at Kingston/ KLM at Norwich.
After getting his Masters he managed to get a job with Biritish Airways in wheels and Brakes, but after 3 years he moved to the main hanger at Heathrow and is now a team leader dealing with 777 and Dreamliners in Terminal 5

Our DD did A Levels then went to Hull University doing a degree in Aquatic Zoology, after working at a number of Aquariums, she has worked at Surrey University and Royal Holloway.

When our DD Grandated we also hired our DS gowns so we could have a photo of them both together.

All 3 of our children went to uni. The eldest studied English and film studies and wanted to go into journalism and travel, he became an admin manager at a college, decided it wasn’t what he wanted and completed a TEFL course and has taught in Asia for the last 6 years.DS2 studied History at uni and achieved a high grade in his degree, started a PGCE with the aim of teaching History but dropped out as he felt it wasn’t for him. He now has a managerial sales career with a very good wage, but had quite a few years working in poorly paid telephone sales after leaving uni.

DD is currently about to start her 3rd year in her Biology degree, which she has enjoyed, but feels she should have pursued her first ambition and studied veterinary science. She’s now considering a masters degree or something that will lead to a fulfilling career path in the future.

It’s so hard at 16, 18 or even 21 when they graduate to know what they want to do for their whole lives. All of my children would say they possibly made the wrong choices at 18 but they enjoyed their time at uni and don’t regret going as it was a base for them to build on for their future careers.

Sometimes it’s not straightforward and they may make the wrong decision but eventually they get to where they want to be. Both our older sons are happy with their choices now and live happy lives, hopefully our DD will achieve the same soon too, although it may take a few years and detours from her original plan before she gets there.

I think your teen needs to follow the path they feel is right for them at the moment but with an open mind that they may change their mind or diversify along the way. I hope it all works out for them x

My dd decided quite young that she wanted to be a vet. She studied really hard at school and got fantastic GCSE results. The vet course is notoriously hard to get accepted for so she did lots of volunteering, extra studies and preparation. She got offered two places and went on to get brilliant A Level results (A*A*AA) to be accepted for her first choice Uni.
She was the youngest in her year to get a place and the only one to get in directly from A Levels.
She is just starting her 3rd year and absolutely adores it.
Our youngest is in Yr 11 and is very sporty. He wants to study Maths/Statistics and is hoping to work in a profession where he can combine this with his love of sport. He is not a bit like his sister and if he had to neuter a dog he would be on the floor in a dead faint at the first sight of blood.😂

Thank you, that is good advice. Some kids appear to know what they want to do early on, others not so much.

Nowadays there are just so many options available and it's really helpful reading all this experiences, to share the wealth of choices and paths open to them.

It's a very new course, not many Unis do it & alternate route into Policing - either take any degree, a Policing degree or Police Apprentice at Uni.

My daughter at 18 wanted to be either a Geography teacher if Web Developer

At sixth form she did Geography, ICT and DT ( Design and Technology)

She went on to do a Web Development degree

At 23 she now a computer coder working for a marketing company and does freelance Wed Design in her own time

DS 22 struggled with school and his GCSE results were ok, he had been lucky enough to do mock interviews in year 11 and a firm of solicitors offered him an apprenticeship providing his exam results were good. He stayed with them until last month.
He’s now started a new role training to be an estate agent, he’s done incredibly well and I’m so proud of him.
DD 17 is currently in her 2nd year of college and is keen to get into acting, lockdown stopped her sitting her GCSEs and all the stress of worrying about the exams she actually did better based on her coursework.

I'm afraid our two boys didn't apply themselves 100% at school, but wanted to go to Uni. DS1 got a place at clearing for international business studies (enjoyed 6 months in Paris at our expense) and ended up in a bank in a non-graduate position, working his way up to fairly senior.

DS2 fancied podiatry and even shadowed a friend at his clinics. Didn't get enough highers and ended up on a risk-management course which has opened up many avenues for him, but his first job was actually a PA to a very disorganised, insomniac, workaholic director in Railway engineering. He worked from home - usually on his laptop in bed (!) at all hours, but he was exposed to a huge amount of senior level discussion and negotiation and worked his way up to project manager, earning more at 28 than his mother did on retirement from a senior NHS post.

DS knew early on he wanted career in cyber security. Took A Levels in Computing, Economics and Mandarin Chinese. School (grammar) only promoted university options, but DS did his own research into degree apprenticeships and pursued both options. Turned down unconditional uni offer in favour of degree apprenticeship with a well known financial institution. At age 22 he has just graduated with a First, has 4 years' work experience and is now on a permanent contract as a cyber security intelligence analyst. He is about to buy his first property, having been able to save more than his peers have accumulated in student debt!

DD has just started Year 13 and only just decided this year that she would like to be a detective. So she will be pursuing the routes other posters have mentioned here already. Based on DS' experience, we will be strongly encouraging the police degree apprenticeship option.

DS wanted to go to Loughborough Uni to do automotive engineering. Ended up not getting high enough A Levels, went through clearing to get a place at Hertfordshire Uni. Got his degree and is now an engineer at McLaren. Loves his job and is really settled. DD has always wanted to be an English teacher, passed her English degree, then PGCE and has just started teaching at one of our local secondary schools. So proud of both of them.
