I've always had sliding, I prefer them. As others have said, can easily control how much you open them and you don't need any swing clearance so no issue with close furniture or people.

But on a narrower 1.8m opening, I might be tempted by French doors to have the wider entrance.

We have French doors. Everyone I know who has been burgled (all 3 of them) were done through patio doors being lifted out. I presume modern day ones no longer make this as easy?

I think it’s the locks, some are more vulnerable (this includes french doors I’m afraid)
We changed our French door locks on a previous house when we found out about it.

Only had sliding doors once, years back, we weren't keen. Rest of houses we have had French doors which I think look nicer, personally.
Best ones we have had are French doors - but with side lights either side which have openers so we can open the windows for fresh air without the actual doors swinging about. (Have them now in our kitchen/diner)
We have had French doors without side windows, in fact still do in one of our downstairs rooms, and it is a little inconvenient getting fresh air in that room without having to open the whole door(s).

We all have different views. To me though I think French look better but Patio can be more practical.

We have Patio ones and I would prefer to have French ones but our dining room is 9" higher than the patio so it's all but impossible to get a fixture to hold them open in breezy conditions whereas the Patio door is either tilted open at the top or slid back partially or fully.

So there we go my post has been no help at all.

having this current dilemma myself - so perfect post for me

I have sliding patio doors, and nearly every home we have had, had sliding patio doors - so getting a little bored of them. But they are very practical, easy to clean (not much framework) and can open as much or as little as needed (we have a tilt facility also), but they now need replacing.

Want to change to french doors, and regarding the issue of keeping open slightly - i thought a door stop would solve ?
one either side of the door ?
