I'm probably using my own made up definition but for me a family coaster has no inversions and no huge drops but can still be thrilling (tight turns, smaller drops, speed / acceleration, novel elements).

This makes sense... It is the fast tight turns that I think really got me, and the backwards bit. The drop didn't bother me in the slightest, I thought it was much smaller than I was expecting!

The ride that messed me up was Soarin. Go figure that one! I think it was Vertigo so you just never know.
