Is the Island big, do we need a car, do they have Uber, I’m not adverse to cooking we aren’t fancy eaters anyway and tbh food is a means to an end so if it’s really exp I would cut back on that as I would prefer to spend the money in the malls when bk in California. We will do Maui, Waikiki beach and a few days in Auluni as if we don’t ever go back I need to stay here. I haven’t researched this as yet so have no clue on how long I need or even at this point the must sees(which is why I at first come to the experts to get my bearings)
Thank you so much for your help
I don’t think I would recommend Maui with no car. I’m not someone who says that always (some Dibbers feel having a car gives them extra flexibility wherever they are, I’m not one of them).

It’s about 30 minutes drive from Kahului (airport) to South Maui resort area (Wailea / Kihei). Longer to west Maui (Ka’anpali) by another 15 minutes or so.

There were Ubers so we took one once when we did a brewery tour five miles from where we stayed, that was fine, but we mostly drove around to various places and Uber would have been expensive.

So groceries were more pricy than the mainland. We didn’t buy a lot though, Mostly fruit / snacks so I didn’t pay a lot of notice to prices. I’d guess 20% more than mainland. O’ahu a little cheaper than Maui. The biggest sticker shock was a frozen pizza serving 2 at $12.99.

Eating out was more expensive than mainland but maybe 10-15% (guess)

Thank you for this. I’ve just read about some dangerous highway in Maui(looking at what the reds look like and this post came up about some horrendous highway). Do you know what this is? Would I even pass it and what is the driving like

Um was this the Pilani Highway? Or are you talking about the treacherous road north of Ka’anpaali which nobody recommends tourists travel on (you would have to make an effort to find it as it’s out of the way) or are you possibly thinking about the back road from Hana which most insurance doesn’t cover?

Sorry to be so unhelpful but it’s hard to answer without knowing which highway you mean.

We've always dreamed of going to Hawaii but the food cost put us off so instead were booking a Hawaiian cruise with royal Caribbean so food is covered and cheaper than booking with VH x
