I would look to book something sooner than later, if you can get one that you can cancel if the prices decrease you can rebook at lower price.
I stay at the PI north as arrive by train. Use Google maps to suss out where the hotels are as a lot will have shuttle buses at a cost but may have bigger rooms. Go through cashback sites to see if you can save anything as it all helps. The breakfast at PI is fab, all you can eat at a reasonable price . They also do a meal deal for dinner, nothing special but when you compare costs for all 3 aspects it may be a great deal rather than eating at the airport. There is also a McDonald's and KFC close by

We have booked the PI South with Flex but we're waiting to see what the prices will be for the Travelodge (they aren't released yet) we prefer to stay as cheap as possible because for us it's just a room for the night really so I think Hilton etc will be out of our budget range xx

We love the Sofitel, but its more of an adult hotel. Our favourite. We also like the Premier North but have you looked at the Bloc. We were pleasantly surprised when we stayed... okay the rooms are small but they came with vouchers for restaurants and free coffee from the coffee shop. We thought they were great. But when we want that little bit of luxury we go for the Sofitel. x

We managed to get a room for our date with Bloc in Gatwick South very easy to find and several different room types available. They have family rooms too with bunk beds for kids. You can see many of the room types on YouTube too.

We usually do Premier Inn the night before, there was one at a decent rate but the parking on top was £15 for a night, so be aware of this, others were over £100.
I’ve just booked Gatwick Belmont, it has its own shuttle service if needed, our flight isn’t until 1pm so we are happy being a couple of miles out. Paid the princely sum of £37 for a double room, BUT they have big family rooms with bunk beds in, sleep up to six I think, so you would only need one room. Not everyone’s cup of tea I’m sure, but we are happy just to get near the airport the night before, there’s a bar and restaurant if we want to use it too. EDIT - sorry, just noticed you don’t have a car but I’ll leave the post here in case anyone else is interested, it would have been £77 for 6 beds!
