East to West on 66 - CANCELLATION

East to West on 66

This will eventually become a part West coast trip but it all starts 2,448 miles in the East on the shores of Lake Michigan, Chicago.
We have done some amazing trips up, down and across the United States. One involved taking the Amtrak railroad from Seattle in the top left corner, down to Emeryville (for San Francisco) across Utah and its Salt Lake City, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa and Illinois for Chicago. Then we cut down through Kentucky and West Virginia heading for Washington D.C. That was some experience.
This time, in mid June, we are attempting Route 66 - some 85% of it is still drive-able. There are sections that are dead ends and some that have serious surface problems but we’ll be getting a SUV (4x4). There is an excellent book called EZ66 by Jerry McClanahan which details every mile to the extent it even shows original sections that have been bypassed, re-routed and even renamed!
As I mentioned we will start in Chicago. The official start sign is found on E. Adams Street but sadly we can’t drive far without a serious detour. This is because the area of Cicero is one of the most dangerous for gang killings. Some of you may have seen the TV programme where Miriam Margoyles visited a gang in this area. During her discussion with some gang members there was a sudden alert where she had to be quickly bundled into a car and out of the area. A rival gang had got wind of the goings on and wanted to intervene. Within 10 minutes of Miriam leaving the area a shooting had taken place. Not, perhaps, the best of starts to a holiday!
We’ll head southwest towards Springfield – birthplace of Abraham Lincoln and then to St Louis (pronounced Loo Iss) for the Gateway Arch. It’s on through Missouri and into Kansas for Tulsa. On through Oklahoma and our next stop will be Amarillo in Texas (Show me the way to…….).
We’ll pass through Adrian – the half way point of the route. We have been advised to visit the Mid Point Café there – there dessert pies are legendary!
It’s on to Albuquerque in New Mexico where we’ll be doing a hot air balloon flight. This town is famous for its annual hot air balloon gathering.

Into Arizona where we will be making a detour north to Monument Valley. There is one hotel here – The View owned by the Navajo native Americans. It’s payback time for them as the room charges are quite astronomical! Another detour – due south will take us to Sedona – a place we really love.
Back on track and we pass into California for a night in Needles. On through Barstow and we will be paying a call at the Forest Lawn Cemetery so we can pay our respects to Walt Disney. We finish Route 66 at Santa Monica Pier. The trip is rounded off with a few days at Disneyland. We’ll be celebrating 4th of July there (our second time of doing that).
Along the way we will see giant spacemen, blue whale slides, frozen custard, neon hotels, a Cadillac range, concrete wigwams and endless diners and souvenir shops. Can’t wait.

I had previously done a pre trip report here: https://DIBB.in/12801680 but feel this is a more appropriate place for it.

Sounds like quite the trip, not that we would expect anything less from you Geoff. I watched the programme on Chicago and definitely think rerouting the start is a good idea! Look forward to hearing more.

Sounds great. A friend of mine, single mum with 2 kids (16 and 12) who has never driven in USA before is doing the route this summer too. I can't decide whether she's brave or nuts but it will certainly be an adventure she and the kids will never forget!
Looking forward to reading your trippie.

Geoff. I know you have been planning this for a long time now and it's not that long before you will be off. Going to be an awesome trip and look forward to the updates and final report you will do.

Thanks people. It's something we have always wanted to do. Think this will be our last "free range" trip. After this I think it may be the "escorted" / cruise kind of holiday in future
