For those on here who actually want to do something a few points to think about.
If you have a pet, why? Is it a necessity, what size is it’s carbon footprint with tins/pouches of dog/cat food? Don’t try turn it vegetarian, you’ll just kill it.(if it’s a working animal at all, it’s not a pet so ok)
How do your kids get to school? Apparently a shocking 60% of kids in the U.K. travel to school by car.
Each day there are 2,600,000 flights. Just over 100 years ago there were none. Think that might be more polluting than a cow.
Nail varnish contains plastic. It’s only going to end up in one place so stop using it (after all it’s the little things that add up.)
World population in 1900 was around 2 billion. In 1960 it was 3 and then 4 billion by 1974. Its now almost 8 billion. We are going to become a victim of our own success. Perhaps we need to stop trying to live forever. (once I’m old and infirm let me go.)

I have not stated that I support XR or even the Thunbergs. I support people’s rights to protest peacefully (as they did today in Bristol) to raise awareness of issues.

I’m not saying the protests will stop climate change, but what else can people do to show governments and businesses how they feel? Should we all just trust the establishment to do the right things? As they don’t seem to be doing much at the moment

Why do I have a pet?

You clearly don’t have one or you would know the answer already.

we have a pet - a dog. It has increased our mental wellbeing and physical heath through daily exercise. It has increased our time outdoors without using transport - as a whole family - taking us away from electrical/electronic devices (0.2 to 10g of CO2 per google search depending on device charging/server powering sources).

He eats a mixed diet - and hoovers up our scraps keeping them from landfill. He kills vermin (including spiders! even the big garage ones with muscles in their spit!)

It is not a necessity, no. But has many advantages in my life - he is not a just a meat to poop machine.

You don’t need a dog to get you to put your device down.
If you have scraps and leftovers then you are buying/cooking/wasting too much.
Spiders aren’t vermin. They carry out a very important role for the planet. Something which pets do not.
The mental health bit has a case but there’s other options.
I’m not trying to provoke anyone, just playing devils advocate and get people to think.

Most definitely. At its current population it’s pretty much unsustainable and it’s not looking like it’s going to reduce any time soon unless we tip over the edge and become the next species to become endangered.

It’s my opinion that humans and I mean big business etc would like to blame animals, pets cows etc rather than humans

I will leave it with this

I ca agree with much of the posts attitudes towards kids being driven to school etc etc but whilst I have working dogs, who actually are still our pets, I’m not sure Stopping dog pouches or cat food pouches would make much of a dent in anyone’s carbon footprint.. now flying across the Atlantic to WDW ...
