The woke...

I’ve read this on several threads and on another forum... referring to the “woke”

Who are the “woke”... is this a derogatory term or some new way of saying an existing word just to sound a tad more intellectual? I read about the (sicJ Islington woke worries about who will give Tarquín his tea...

It’s a genuine question

Some Urban Slang thing.

Mind you this horrendous wind here woke me up. Does that count as a 'woke'?

I have no idea, and totally confused by it all. I thought it was the latest term taking over from 'snowflake' but I was wrong

I am way behind all these terms and it gives me a headache trying to keep up, I did try Googling 'woke' when it kept coming up across social media but I was still none the wiser as to why it is being used more and more and suddenly 'popular' to use the term.

Woke is a slang term that is easing into the mainstream from some varieties of a dialect called African American Vernacular English (sometimes called AAVE). In AAVE, awake is often rendered as woke, as in, “I was sleeping, but now I'm woke.” 'Woke' is increasingly used as a byword for social awareness.

That is the dictionary defination, however it is now being used in a degoratory and patronising way to suggest that people who may express a social awareness of an issue are just following a media trend.

I love Google!

Woke:-

The act of being very pretentious about how much you care about a social issue.

A word currently used to describe "consciousness" and being aware of the truth behind things.

Using an improper word in an incorrect tense to attempt to attach some worldly significance to a person or object (books, screenplay, etc.) so that one appears to be "hip." In actual fact, this usage shows one's ignorance and inability to use words and feelings to express oneself properly.

A state of perceived intellectual superiority one gains by reading The Huffington Post.

So in other words its total pants!

I’ve never heard ‘woke’ being used in any context other than the above! And neither has my 14yr old

There is a Dibb abbreviation menu.

Maybe 'woke' should be included in there?

Ah ok, that makes sense. I’ll put it in the bin where it belongs, and disregard the use

Woke ≈≈≈...
