DVC Member Cruise - Oct 2019 - Travel
Booked when released this had been a long time coming.
Originally it was me, my wife and our daughter going but she dropped out after changing her plans and going back to uni to her final year of her degree instead of a year in industry. Had a manic week at work before heading out the door bang on 4PM. Decided to try the train from Nuneaton to Heathrow instead of driving, at £60 for the two of us in 1st Class it looked a good deal. A 10 minute walk to the train station and on the train on time and excited. 1st Class wasn't Intercity style, no luggage space and no service. The full shebang 1st Class on Virgin was £230, so you get what you pay for. No ticket check at Nuneaton, none on train and none at Euston. We could have travelled for free. A bit of a faff getting to Terminal 5, changed at Green Park, both tubes were pretty busy which made getting on with two full cases and two hand luggage 'challenging'. Arrived at T5 without a hitch, jumped in the Pod to the Thistle Hotel. Checked in and in the bar within a few minutes. Hotel was very cheap, £55 but Pod was £5 each each way. Hotel was dated but ended up with a comfortable night after a drink in the bar. Nowhere near as nice at the Hilton Garden at T4 but was clean and quiet. Back on the Pod in the morning, checked in and through security pretty quickly. I'd been though T5 50+ times when I worked away so knew what to expect, my wife was impressed with the upscale facilities and shopping. Tried out some free rum and scanned the shops before Eggs Benedict in Wetherspoons. Flight was from the 'B' gates, quick shuttle over there and another drink, which we then had to rush as we were boarded early. Comfy flight over despite a bit of turbulence. No wine with dinner though as crew scarpered when the turbulence started. No worries, it's dodgy wine at the best of times. Arrived into Newark. Chaos. Huge queue for immigration, slower than MCO if that was possible. Picked up bags then another huge queue to go through 'customs'. Lots of grumbling from every nationality, including Americans. We used the NJ Transit into Penn, easy process to buy tickets and get on the train. Old and scruffy but we were in Penn within 35 mins. Walked up 7th from Penn to 44th to the Intercontinental Times Square. Was a nice lobby and had a quality feel, check in was a few minutes and room was ready straightaway. No view from the room but it was nice suite. Out into Midtown for a wander ... |
