Jetlag question

Hi Dibbers,

My first time posting in the Tokyo forum!

We have had one of those trips that's expanded from a European jaunt to a bucket list 2 week trip to Japan.

We have decided we'd rather fly indirect and save the money so we can splash out on the Mandarin Oriental in Tokyo.

i just have a question - most of the more affordable flights land in Japan in the morning. Does this mess you up for jetlag?

My thought was to try and stay up most of the night in the UK before we fly, then sleep on the flight even though it takes off in the morning, then try and stay awake for most of the day in Japan before having an earlyish night and getting a full night's sleep.

How do you cope?! I don't want to waste too much day sleeping.

Thanks!

Sorry can't help, but I'd be interested in this too. Our flight arrives into Narita at 10.35 am and I'm dreading feeling how I do after I lose time coming back from Vegas!

We flew at 15.45 direct with BA and landed at 11.30, both times and direct

We slept a little overnight but overall when we arrived it’s full daylight so there was not really a feeling of tired

By around 7 to 8 pm we were flagging and went back to the hotel and slept thru to the next morning

The following couple of days we would be very tired around the evening but would find getting to sleep very difficult but a few days are were adjusted

Thus time it took me just one day

Coming back we are awake all the time on the plane and land around 5 pm

So we just carry on as normal

Over the next few days we would be tired early eve and awake around 4 am but I gained an hour per day so after about 4 days I was waking as normal

It’s better in that when you get back we have no trouble getting to sleep which for me I s better

I found it better than returning from Florida where for us we were unable to get to sleep for days and would then wake up tired

We flew into Haneda and arrived at about 7:30am. Our strategy was to sleep as much as we could on the flight once we'd had dinner. We checked into our hotel around 10am and had a sleep for about 4 hours. After that we were good to go and didn't really have any problems at all, other than one morning when we slept in rather longer than we'd intended. Oops
I'd been quite concerned about jet lag before the trip, but was pleasantly surprised that we didn't really feel it.

Thanks! I suppose it helps having the excitement of Japan to get on with. Whereas with jetlag back home, it' never helps knowing it's back to normality, lol!

We just got home on Friday after 3 weeks away and it’s been pretty much as Kevin described for us. We got to Japan around mid day after a uk - Hong Kong - Narita flight, we slept on the second flight and then carried on as normal, we got a little sleepy in the evening for a few days, but over all had no problems. On our return we woke around 3.30am and by that I mean wide awake, no hope of more sleep haha, now after 3 nights I woke just before six, so it’s getting there!
