Driving/parking in Vegas

Hi There
Im unsure if I am going to hire a car while in Vegas. We are only there for a week. We are wanting to visit fermont street, walmart and maybe an outlet.
Would it be around the same cost just to get cabs?
Where would we park if we went to ferment street ?
Also is there a shuttle service from the airport?

Advice much appreciated,

Thanks
Jane

We always have a car and wouldn't be without one .

There are still free places to park on the strip , Tropicana , treasure island , fashion show mall , Venetian , stratosphere .

And if your going soon all the Caesars group hotels are still free but that will change soon .

We always use the valet parking at the Fremont Hotel on Fremont street it's only a few dollars tips .

Don't know what cabs cost really last time we used one from Caesars to Tropicana was about $20 that was a while ago .
There are shuttles /cabs from the airport but not free .

You'll get those saying you don't need a car in Vegas and you don't so much if your not leaving the strip , but having been many times a car makes life much easier and gives you the freedom to go where you want when you want . And even with having a car we still walk miles each day .

I am of the opinion if you are staying on strip mostly its not worth hiring a car. We took uber/lyft to Walmart for $9 and slightly more to Fremont St. Saves the parking fees at most of the strip hotels now. I know there are some hotels that dont charge. Took lyft from the airport for $12. Think its about $14 per 24 hours to park at Mirage. I thought Caesars group had started charging already, but its very soon. Hotels vary with what they charge. When there were no parking fees I would have said might be ok, but then you have to factor in cost of car hire, and petrol. Even with a car you will have long walks between the hotels on the strip. If you are venturing off strip to GC, Hoover Dam etc definitely need a car so we get one just for those few days. We loved Uber/Lyft and with the codes available got some rides for $5.
Just another opinion

Caesars group are rolling about the parking charges in stages, the Linq was the first a few weeks back but not all the others are charging as yet, We used the Flamingo many times last month for free, they didn't even have the parking machines installed yet.

If your savvy (or bothered about parking charges) there are free car parks at all ends of the strip so there's no need to pay.

I did pay twice for parking $7 per time.. but it would cost more than that for a Uber or whatever.
Of course if your staying in a hotel that charges for parking you'll have around $105 parking fee's for the week.

I have mixed feelings about the parking costs really.. I'm not a fan in general but I pay more to park in my local town than I do in Vegas for the day .

My car costs are quite minimal really.. The car/flights package was £200 more than flight only.

So £200 car hire , $160 fuel for 2000 miles , $20 parking Disney, $14 in Vegas and about $20 in LA.. not bad for 3 weeks.. about £370 in total . And I probably save a good chunk of that by eating off strip where its cheaper.

Each to their own. :-)

So which hotel will you be staying at Jane35? I guess you are staying on the strip? I seem to remember your post a while back about Hotwire. Did you get booked up? My advice is given based on you staying on strip

The Flamingo is definitely charging for parking now as is CP so there are very few that don't charge. You would need one near your hotel to benefit from using this to avoid overnight parking charges.

If you use the Uber estimator on the app it gives you prices so you can price up your journeys and maybe work out what works best for you.

We are there in May again for 10 nights and unless we go away for a day or two will just use Uber/Lyft for our short journeys.

Don't think anyone is going to park in another hotel car park over night to avoid charges what I meant was if your parking on the strip in the day /evening there are places still that don't charge
Tropicana , treasure island , Venetian, Palazzo , wynn/ encore , Circus Circus ,fashion show mall , stratosphere , SLS and the parking for the shops at Crystals ( near the front of the Aria /vdara ) so plenty to choose from in all areas of the strip . Cosmopolitan is also free but only till mid may . There's also a car park behind the Ross dress for less near the Peppermill I can't imagine that charges either .

You can also park for free at Mandalay bay if you use the parking for The Shoppes .. there is no time limit and nothing to stop you parking there and using the casino or visiting the Shark reef .. most just don't realise the Shoppes have a seperate parking area .

I ended up hiring a car. We decided that it was easier than the shuttles from the airport, and probably cheaper than a taxi. We also wanted to go to Red Rock Canyon and we went to an outlet mall and Freemont Street so it worked out for us. We were also planning to drive to Rio fro Penn and Teller, but I had a drink so we walked lol.

However we didn't have to consider parking charges then on the strip (we did pay on Freemeont street). But Given we stayed at Mirage and Treasure island is next door and you pretty much drive past that car park to get to the mirage car park I would proablby park there to avoid the charge (for now)

Rio is also free parking and I think all off strip properties .

I'm not a gambler but I know if you reach certain levels in the various rewards programmes parking is also free .

Yes I can see it would work for those two hotels given they are so close . We should have thought of that last month would have saved me $7 :/) ,

Fremont we try to valet park so it costs a few dollars .. I dislike the multi story there so do my best to avoid it .

Yes I agree it was different when you didnt have to consider parking charges! A few people on another forum I visit have stopped hiring a car for this reason. I asked about which hotel OP was staying at to see if she could use TI parking if she is staying nearby. If she was going to Red Rock or anywhere else a car is a must.
