I totally agree with you Heather. Maybe for a first timer a stay in one of the big 3 (Bellagio, Wynn, Venetian) would be nice especially for a big occasion. In saying that I am up to 6 visits and I still haven't got away from the Tropicana/Strip junction group of hotels (MGM, NYNY, Excalibur and Luxor).
I have had the opportunity to take a look in some rooms at other hotels and to be honest I haven't been as blown away as I thought. Certainly comparing standard rooms, I still think the MGM beats a lot of other hotels and if you can get a room there for $49-$69 that would always be my choice. Location doesn't come into it IMHO.
For my trip in November I thought long and hard about a return to the MGM (it would be third time in three years) but my Saturday arrival clashes with a fight night and it is expensive. Ditto the Sunday, although not quite as bad but for the M-T it is $69 which is very tempting. My Wife mentioned over familiarity and I think that might play a part with the MGM so we agreed to look elsewhere and a cracking Excalibur deal came up at $68 for the Saturday and $22 for Sun-Thurs inclusive. At those prices I was sorely tempted by upgrading to a Widescreen room but we both agreed to go with the standard room and see if anything is offered at check in to upgrade. If we have to stick with the standard room I don't mind at all, whilst it is not the best standard room by a long shot in Vegas, it does the job and I quite liked it in 2006 when we stayed there last.

$22 a night even with a resort fee of $5 and tax is still ridiculous.

Oh don't apologise Lisa, I just found it amusing.

In 2006 when we were on our round the world trip (8 months) I managed to convince my Wife to head to Vegas for 4 nights which she agreed to as long as I could keep hotel costs down. We planned our arrival badly as it was 4 nights starting on a Saturday and when I was booking things before we went I got the Excalibur Sunday-Weds quite cheaply (although nowhere near the prices you can get it these days) but Saturday was over $200! Even the likes of the Sahara, Circus Circus and the Stratosphere were expensive so I opted for the Motel 6 on Tropicana Avenue (almost opposite the main car entrance to the MGM) for $65 that Saturday night.
I think if I was to mention staying somewhere on a budget it would be a hotel like the Motel 6 and not the Mirage, but I do understand the comment now if your first choice was the Bellagio.

Personally, out of the two I would still have gone for the Mirage anyway. Whilst the Bellagio is pretty stunning, its not enough to convince me to stump up the extra to stay there over a mid to upper range property such as the Mirage or MGM.

Now, $109 + tax for a luxury suite at either place is a superb price,to stay in real luxury, but the offers with it make these great deals!
I just got so excited about those deals and was fully poised to book but then realised it doesn't go up to my dates

Sign up for offers with the Venetian and they will send you offers, Ive had loads so far, when I 1st signed up there were no offers for Oct and now ive had a few, have you also tried vegas-promotions/ I got a fab deal for the Mirage (which theyve now taken off!) which beat other deals by about $350 for 7 nights.

As stated above, sign up for both The Venetian & The Palazzo deals, via their website. You will continue to get offers, but you need to act fast. They tend to send deals out that get booked quickly, because everyone knows $109 for 5* hotels (which they both are) cannot be missed!

It's amazed me the deals you can find when you look. I looked on fatwallet.com and just went through all the hotels and put my dates into the promotion offers. I had booked MGM originally on a deal which promised a celebrity spa suite but found out they were fully booked, i was still paying a good price for a tower room @ $660 for a week but i was wary of not getting what i thought i'd been offered, the teeny small print stated they would try and accomodate room preference. I was going to stick with MGM but had a play with codes and got The Mirage for $504 including taxes for a week so i went with that. The prevailing reason is i have arthritis in my spine and walking can get difficult. Being in the middle of the strip just suited me a little better. Have you tried a flight only or a flydrive and booking the hotel seperately. Just a thought but it may save you some pennies. Wherever you decide you can't make a bad choice. Lisax

As Lisa has said there are deals are a plenty at the moment and Vegas gives you the opportunity either to stay a night in stunning 5* hotels for the price we would pay for a Saturday night in a Travelodge in York City centre, or a night in a mid range 3* such as the Excalibur for the price of 4 pints at my local pub.

Personally, I still like the stay cheap, eat/gamble/drink/watch big mentality although I'm sure one day we will fancy the 5* luxury of a Wynn or Venetian.

Lisa, that Mirage deal is very good as I've mentioned already. To be honest the Mirage was our initial first choice if we went back this year but with a number of circumstances working against us for the first half of 2009, we are going for a cheap Algarve holiday in early September and holding out with that Excalibur deal and hopefully reasonable flight prices to Vegas in November for my birthday.

I'm really looking forward to both trips.

Hope you get there and have a great time in the Algarve. We're off next week, the only reason we plumped for Vegas was because it's our first kid free holiday so we thought we'd go somewhere adult friendly. Lisax
