We are here now and this is what we have done
4 nights in LA just right for us, did a tour, six flags and day at the beaches 4 nights in Yosemite 2 nights in Lake Tahoe 3 nights in San Francisco 2 nights in Monterey 1 night in Pismo Beach (here now, wish we had just continued to Santa Barbara) 2 nights in Santa Barbara Only thing I would change is knock Pismo Beach off and add a night into San Francisco

We travel with mid- teens who don’t mind hours in the car. I’ll give you our intineraries so you can see how we broke things down. How it works for you depends on how much driving you don’t mind doing (we tended to fine drive times were a little longer than google maps suggested) and how many hotels you want. One option I’d definitely recommend is flying either to or from SF. Then you don’t have to drive both ways. If you drop the car off in SF you should avoid the one way rental fee, which usually applies if you pick up in Sf and drop off in LA. Southwest air are our airline of choice. They definitely fly from Burbank to SF, as we considered doing that this time.
First trip - fly to Vegas 5 nights Vegas Fly to SF (£100 for all of us inc bags) 3 nights SF Pick up car & Pacific Highway 1 Monterey (including Carmel, 17 mile drive) 1 Luis San Obispo (next time would go straight to Santa Barbara) 2 Marina del Rey for LA (Venice beach, Santa Monica, downtown, Griffiths Observatory, Mulholland Drive, Beverly Hills) 3 Anaheim (plenty of time for Disney) Second trip- leaving for home today ! Fly to SF - overnight airport Fly to San Diego (Southwest ) 4 SD - USS Midway, Coronado, zoo, balboa park 2 Palm Springs 3 Vegas 1 Bishop 2 Yosemite 1 SF |

As you can see, we did one holiday down the Pacific Highway and one doing inland. We like a hectic itinerary, and that’s what we’ve had. We’re pretty tired now. I think to do everything you suggest , plus San Diego is a bit much. But only you know how you’ll cope

Thank you for all the really helpful replies. Yes, I’m going to scrap San Diego and concentrate on what we really want to do. I have older teens but sat in the car for hours on end isn’t appealing to them or us. I would rather break up the journeys with a couple more stops.
We are used to Florida holidays with everything being close together so trying to get my head around the size of the state is taking a while. |

Our first trip back in 09 was very similar to what you want to do apart from we flew into LAX and out of SF...
when we landed we drove to San Diego... not ldeal as we landed at 8pm and had to pick up tickets from DL... ended up getting there at midnight. 3 nights San Diego 7 nights Anaheim/LA 1 night Pismo Brach 2 nights Monterey 2 nights Yosemite 2 nights San Francisco Worked fine for us... this will be our 4th trip ... and we still probably do the amount of driving we did the first trip

Now that I’m back and have the holiday blues badly, I thought I would update you all with what we actually did:
Flew in and out of LAX 2 nights Manhattan Beach - day one was a relaxing day, day two we went to Six flags and then on to 2 nights Fresno - day one we visited Sequoia NP and day two shopping and drove to Yosemite 3 nights in log cabin in Wawona Yosemite - amazing and the highlight of the trip! Did wawona museum, glacier point and valley floor and then drove to San Francisco, stopping at the outlets for some retail therapy on the way (an hour outside SF). 3 nights San Francisco - took a Dylans tour and did all the sights before heading to... 2 nights Monterey for aquarium and museum. Then drove down PCH to Pismo beach for an overnight stay and then headed to Redondo beach for the final 2 nights - visiting Knott’s berry farm and doing a whistle stop tour of Hollywood sign, Walk of fame etc. It was busy but just about the right pace for us. We only did one, 1 night stop and appreciated the time to relax now and again especially on our 3 night stops. The longest drive was from Yosemite to SF but stopping off at the outlets broke the journey up nicely. I hope this helps someone - I was completely overwhelmed in the beginning but it all came together perfectly and was our best holiday yet. Looking to do another road trip next year if the price is right! |
