I live a bit further south than you, KLM also fly from Teesside which I’ve done before for other long haul destinations but when I’m looking at the minute that option seems to get you in late.

Manchester we could reach easily by train, it’s also not a bad drive for us (probably quicker than the train actually) but it’s the drive on return that’s always a bit rubbish. Which is the same problem from London but might be worth it if it’s for direct flights at a good price.
We got the train up from Newcastle and stayed overnight. Then got the airport bus straight to the airport. Was a bit of an added cost for the hotel but we hadn’t been to Edinburgh so made a day of it seeing the sights.
The train was only £20 ish for the three of us for one way.

We booked back in January for 30/10-17/11 £710 each PE with Virgin Man-Atl-Mco. Prices seemed crazy this year, 2 years ago I got direct PE for £740 but even direct economy was more expensive this time than indirect PE!

Oh and I use Google flight search to determine which dates are cheapest then switch to Skyscanner to find best price on those dates. I've used netflights past 2 trips.
